Haig Park has seen quite the renaissance over the last 18 months, as new life has been breathed into this once-neglected space.

Now, one of the biggest permanent additions yet is being crafted for the park—a community centre that will offer a blank space for events, workshops, playgroups, yoga and community groups.

And, as with all of the Haig Park’s activations, Canberrans are being encouraged to have their say on the design and inclusions, so planners can better understand what the community might want or need in this space.

City Renewal Authority CEO, Malcolm Snow explained that a community centre was found to be a much-desired addition to Haig Park during the very successful Haig Park Experiments in 2019, which just last week scooped an ACT Award for Excellence from the Planning Institute of Australia.

Of course, the building has been crafted keeping sustainability at its core, with a solar passive design, ventilation and natural life, water harvesting for irrigation and the use of salvaged, re-purposed and low-carbon content building materials.

“The centre is intended to open out to the landscape, extending into a semi-covered courtyard, which integrates the indoor spaces and the surrounding park,” said Mr Snow, adding that the Haig Park Experiments
