Do you have a photogenic pooch, charismatic cat or beautiful bird?

It’s that time of the year again—time to enter your superstar pet in the Domestic Violence Crisis Service’s 2021 Pets of Canberra Calendar competition!

Open to all pets of the ACT and surrounding regions, DVCS wants to see your pawwwfert pooches, curious cats, handsome horses, rascally rabbits and everything in between.

Naturally, there are always plenty of dogs and cats entered—but this year, DVCS also want to see more horses, rabbits, mice, rats, lizards, snakes, chickens and birds.

“We’ve been thrilled with the response to our calendars for 2019 and 2020 and are hopeful we can build on that for our 2021 calendar,” said DVCS Community Development and Engagement Manager, Alanna Davis.

“We only get a handful of pets that aren’t dogs and cats. We love our dogs and cats, but we want to ensure our calendar is diverse. Our 2020 calendar had a lizard, rabbit, horse and some super special chickens. We are keen to see this diversity continue into our 2021 calendar. We encourage everyone to enter all different types of pets.”

DVCS Champion and one half of Mix 106.3’s breakfast team, Kristen Davidson is one of the judges and says she “loved looking at all the cute pets last year, and the year before.”

“As tough as the decision was, I eventually settled on a really cute and cuddly cat—really gorgeous. Being involved in judging is a really easy way for me to continue to support the work of DVCS. I’m thrilled to be involved again this year and can’t wait to see this year’s cuties!”

This year, things have been difficult for our entire community and sadly, DVCS has had to cancel their major fundraising event due to social distancing guidelines as a result of COVID-19.

Luckily, their 2021 Pets of Canberra Calendar is one thing that has been able to proceed.

As always, the calendar is supported by volunteer photographers, Oak & Dust Photography, LJ King Photography and Mallie Taylor. This will be the third calendar for all of them.

“I’m so excited to be part of this experience again,” says volunteer photographer Lauren King of LK King Photography. “I love photographing all the pets and working with their parents to ensure I capture their real personality. It’s a true honour to provide this opportunity for DVCS. I love it!”

The team of Judges includes DVCS Champions Adam Shirley (ABC Radio), Alan Tongue (NRL), Amanda Whitley (HerCanberra), Andrew Muirhead (Brumbies), Christian Lealiifano (Brumbies), Genevieve Jacobs (Region Media), Juliet Moody (SparrowFolk), Kristen Davidson (Mix 106.3), Sue Webeck (ANU), DVCS Staff and children and DVCS supports.

Money raised from the entry fees and proceeds of sale of the calendar are used by DVCS to provide extra support to their clients, people impacted by domestic and family violence within our local community.

Those supports include emergency accommodation, groceries, petrol, mobile phones and credit, support groups, security upgrades and activities for children and young people.

Entries into the 2021 Pets of Canberra Calendar are just $10 per pet and are open until 31 August 2020. Calendars will go on sale in October at a cost of just $30 for A4 size, $35 for A3 size or $25 for a desk calendar (including postage).
