Prayers = answered: Here are five low-cost international flights from Canberra in 2024

If you love to travel like me, you know there’s nothing that brings down the vibe pre-or-post holiday more than having to drive or bus interstate to catch your flight.

However, the recent arrival of Fiji Airways at Canberra Airport is making it easier for Canberrans to travel not only direct to Fiji, but to experience convenient connections to the US and Canada – and at a cost that will make all your New Year’s travel resolutions come true.

Yes, really. Because Fiji Airways boasts a truly glorious range of low-cost, full-service flights that depart Canberra and fly to a variety of exciting destinations via Nadi, Fiji, three times a week.

Are you ready for the destinations and prices?

We know we are…

Why not start your US adventure in Los Angeles or San Francisco, both of which you can fly to with Fiji Airways, from just $1345 return? Or perhaps you’re craving an epic ski holiday? Make it happen with return flights to Vancouver from $1825.

If it’s the summer vibe you’re chasing, make Fiji your destination – whether it’s a relaxing family holiday (hello, kids club!), a romantic getaway or a solo adventure, prices start at just $765 for a return flight.

For the best of both worlds, you can even design your flights to include a stopover in Fiji at either end of your travel. A holiday skiing in Banff or hiking in the misty Pacific Northwest before spending a recovery week lying on a beach in Fiji? Heaven.

While many of us seasoned travellers have gotten friendly with budget airlines to enable our wanderlust (where a bottle of water costs as much as the ticket) Fiji Airways offers a full-service experience, including in-flight entertainment and meals, and trust us – that warm, welcoming hospitality Fijians are known for starts the second you board the plane.

For those still getting their heads around the concept of flying internationally from Canberra, let us explain what a delight this is. I’ve only done it once and I’m still thinking about it.

Arrive at Canberra Airport and move through security as you would usually. Can we suggest a spot of shopping before heading up to the international departures lounge? Snap up last-minute presents or goodies at Merchant on level two, where you’ll find your favourite local goodies including The Canberra Distillery gin (might we recommend the HerCanberra French Earl Grey Gin?) as well as gifts from Bison Homewares and Jasper & Myrtle and more.

For indulgent travel treats, head to Amuse Beauty Studio to shop Jo Malone, Tom Ford and MAC, and if you’re looking to fuel up pre-travel, feast on Asian delights at Noodles XO, head to City Hill for all-day dining, grab a seat at the Airport Taproom for pub fare and a glass of wine, or swing past Bakers Cut for a quick bite on the go.

Then, head up to the international departures lounge on level three – just turn left and head up the escalator next to Noodles XO! There, your passport will be checked and another round of security screening will be conducted before you’re free to stroll through CBR Duty Free – without the crowds of bigger cities.

Start your holidays early with a drink in the international lounge, a glass of bubbles in hand with uninterrupted views over the runway is the ultimate lounge experience. In fact, it’s one of the most relaxing flying experiences I’ve ever had.
