UC’s Open Day just became Canberra’s must-attend spring festival

Posted on
The University of Canberra (UC) is transforming the traditional open day into something bigger: a full-scale community festival that welcomes everyone.
On Saturday 20 September, UC will host its first-ever Open Day Festival, combining university showcases with entertainment, food, and activities for all ages.
This isn’t just for prospective students. Families, alumni, curious locals, and anyone looking for a great Saturday out are invited to explore the campus and discover what makes UC special. Whether you’re 17 and contemplating your future or 47 and curious about what’s happening at our local university, this festival promises something for everyone.
From hands-on learning experiences to live entertainment, free food to sporting showcases, here’s what awaits you at Canberra’s newest spring festival.
Festival vibes, entertainment and activities
The Concourse lawns will be buzzing with live music throughout the day, creating a festival atmosphere across the campus. Jack River will be the headline entertainment with a number of local Canberra acts lined up to keep the vibes high across the day. If live music isn’t your jam, Slam! Pro Wrestling League (a crowd favourite) will also be featuring at Open Day this year, promising to be both thrilling and unexpected at a university event.
Parents can relax while kids enjoy jumping castles, face painting, balloon artists, and a fascinating reptile exhibition in the dedicated Kids Zone which happens to be just outside the Adult Learning Hub to keep young and old(er) all entertained.
Come hungry for UC’s iconic free blue doughnuts, which will be available throughout the festival alongside various food vendors offering delicious options (there’s even a classic sausage sizzle!). It’s the perfect opportunity to fuel up between activities.
A taste of university life and learning
Each faculty has designed engaging, hands-on activities that showcase what studying at UC looks like.
At the Faculty of Health – Nursing & Midwifery Hub, you can get hands-on experience with simulation manikins designed to replicate real patient scenarios, giving you an insight into what training in healthcare is really like.
The Faculty of Business, Government & Law invites you to explore UC’s state-of-the-art Moot Court and gain a technology-oriented court experience without the pressures of a real courtroom.
Creative minds can get live on the microphones at UCFM Radio Station through the Faculty of Arts & Design or explore a world of hands-on design and creation in Workshop7, UC’s innovative maker space.
Tech enthusiasts can test their digital detective skills at the Faculty of Science & Technology with a real-time cybersecurity “Capture the Flag” competition powered by Cisco, where you’ll solve security challenges and protect virtual systems.
The Open Day is also a chance to discover UC’s strong sporting connections and programs. Engage and play sports with professional athletes (including the UC Capitals), see how athletics integrates with university life, and explore the sporting opportunities available to students.
Dive into the nitty-gritty of UC study
Thinking about university study? Expert staff from every faculty will be available to answer questions and provide genuine insights into different degree options. It’s an ideal opportunity for anyone considering their next educational step.
Pop along to the Student Life Hub to learn about admissions processes, scholarship opportunities, and global learning programs. You’ll get the practical information you need to turn interest into action.
There’s also a dedicated Adult Learner Hub for alumni wanting to reconnect with UC and anyone considering returning to study after time away. It’s the place to discover flexible learning options designed for working professionals and career changers.
And with the Kids’ Zone located just outside, any parents considering study can enjoy a chat with Faculty reps while the kids are (safely!) occupied.
No matter your age or current situation, whether you’re exploring future study options or simply want to connect with your local community, UC’s Open Day Festival promises to be an event worth attending.
Mark Saturday 20 September in your diary now and keep your eyes peeled for more information closer to the date!
