Big move for Cataldo’s Salon

Posted on

It’s a new era for Canberra’s best-known hairdressing empire – the Cataldo family – as they’ve opened their long-awaited new salon in the heart of Civic.

The vast new space is modernist and light-filled with huge windows overlooking the trees on Ainslie Avenue, right behind the Canberra Centre.

It’s a big change for the Cataldo’s team, which has been creating award-winning hairstyles from beneath the iconic arches of the Melbourne Building on Northbourne Avenue for more than 30 years. Directors Emilio and Angelo Cataldo said the major investment in a new salon was a sign of their faith in the city and in their desire to promote and nurture new generations of stylists.
For more than 50 years, three generations of the family have dedicated their lives to the industry, following in the footsteps of patriarch Guiseppe Cataldo, who in 1965, created the first Cataldo’s Salon in Hobart Place shortly after migrating from Italy.

But the move to the new salon was a chance to refresh and revitalise, expand floorspace, enhance the customer experience, and push new boundaries in style locally, nationally and internationally.

Long before Canberra had earned any serious style credential, Cataldo’s-styled hair was breaking ground for the city, being featured across the country’s glossy magazines while earning international awards.

While Emilio and Angelo Cataldo have overseen the salon’s artistic direction for the past three decades, the next generation – including Guiseppe’s grandchildren Claudia and Michael Cataldo are now on the rise.

Just last month, Claudia and Michael took out the ACT/NSW State Finals for the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Australia and will compete in the national finals in Melbourne next year. Emilio said the industry had been good to his family, that the family wanted to continue its and so investment into the industry. The new salon spares no expense in its multi-level, sleek industrial design and bespoke fitout which celebrates the best of local design – Robert Foster hanging lights at the entrance, as well as Italian luxury through a new bank of black leather chairs at the Wash lounges washing station.

“We have always believed in the importance of the environment being critical to the customer experience and also assisting in the creative process,” said Emilio. “While many businesses have sought to cut corners and wind back their customer service, we believe that is where our future lies. Our customers are diverse, well-travelled and appreciate style – and we want them to experience a salon that is world-class.”

Angelo said that in the first few days, client feedback had been extremely enthusiastic. “Our clients love the international feel of the space – and say they could be anywhere in the world, in London or New York.”

“We love that people are looking in to see the space through the huge windows. We welcome anyone to pop in and see what we have achieved, and to experience what we all work so hard to deliver – a truly world-class hair styling experience.”
