Canberra gets breakthrough treatment for acne – here’s what you need to know

Those suffering from acne in Canberra now have access to a breakthrough laser treatment that offers a promising new option without any drugs or downtime.
Aviclear is the first FDA and TGA energy device cleared for the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe acne. It works by targeting the oil glands of the skin, a root cause of acne breakouts. Since it first launched in 2022 in the United States, the AviClear Laser has been making waves thanks to its non-invasive and minimal discomfort approach.
Brought to Canberra by Dr Jeremy Chou of Dr J Aesthetics – a leading doctor-run aesthetic and skin clinic located in Kingston – the launch of the AviClear Laser is welcomed news for sufferers of stubborn acne.
Previously only available in interstate clinics, Dr Jeremy says that he wanted to bring the treatment to Canberra to help patients who would prefer, or need to avoid acne medications, as well as those who are struggling to get appointments for Dermatologist only prescribed medication.
“If anyone has ever tried to get an appointment with a dermatologist in Canberra, they would know it’s exceedingly difficult to get into any of them, let alone one that you vibe with,” he says.
“The AviClear Laser is the only evidence-based alternative to produce results similar to such medications. For those with severe inflammatory acne, I thought it would be great for patients to be able to access another option locally, rather than having to go interstate.”

What you need to know
So how does AviClear work and what are its benefits over other acne treatments like medication or topicals? We break it down.
How does it work?
Unlike conventional treatments, AviClear uses a 1726 nm wavelength targeted laser to directly ablate the oil glands of the skin which suppresses and allows remodelling of their sebum production . Helping to reduce excessive sebum production and prevent clogged pores, it offers a more enduring solution for acne of all severities (including cystic acne).
Designed to be delivered as a set of three 45 minute treatment sessions spaced fourweeks apart, according to the AviClear website, in the original clinical trial 92 per cent of patients using the treatment saw at least half of their acne resolve at 12 months following.
Who is the AviClear Laser suitable for and what are the benefits?
Unlike other acne treatments, AviClear is suitable for all skin types and skin tones, and can also treat acne in difficult-to-manage areas like the shoulders and back.
It also offers an alternative for those seeking a non-invasive treatment for even severe acne – especially for patients who can’t tolerate prescription Vitamin A tablets, hormones, or antibiotics, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
There’s no downtime – you’ll just need to avoid excessive sun and heat exposure along with makeup, exfoliants and actives (such as retinoids and vitamin C) for a period of time after your treatment.
Does it hurt and are there any side effects?
AviClear is a non-invasive treatment with generally minimal side effects. Some patients may see some mild redness and swelling right after the treatment which usually settles within a few hours.
In all honesty when it comes to pain, it depends on the person and their tolerance. Described as a “slight snapping sensation” and a “mild discomfort”, everyone will have a different experience. But the AviClear Laser is equipped with exclusive AviCool™ skin cooling and sensory controls, which will help to maintain the skin’s temperature, making the experience more comfortable than your typical laser treatment.
If you’re worried about it feeling a bit spicy, Dr Jeremy is also happy to discuss alternative pain relief options for anyone who would like to know what’s available.
Is there anything else I need to know?
At the time of writing, Dr J Aesthetics is the only provider of AviClear in Canberra. You will need to have an initial acne consultation so Dr Jeremy can provide some more personalised information about the treatment and your acne concerns.
“We always stress to our patients, like any treatment, there’s no such thing as a perfect treatment. It’s just another option in our toolbox,” says Dr Jeremy
“But it’s also about letting patients know what the treatment options are. We find a lot of patients don’t even get told about the basic treatments that are currently available. That’s why we’re trying to get the word out and provide education.”

Whether you’ve struggled with breakouts for years or your skin needs some extra love, with several awards under its belt – including NewBeauty’s 2025 Beauty Award for Best Laser Treatment, Elle’s 2022 Future of Beauty Award, and a 2025 Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite Laser Treatment for Acne – this innovative treatment is worth looking into.
