Local Loves: Nullarbor Nights Knitwear

Posted on

As Canberra’s custom frosty mornings settle in, few things bring more comfort than throwing on a thick, cosy knit.

Perhaps the home of the cosiest knits you can find is Queanbeyan’s Nullarbor Nights Knitwear.

Established in 1991, the business began in a small stone house in the Nullarbor Desert, the inspiration behind its name. The Workshop, Studio and Gallery has been situated in Queanbeyan since 2006, where it has steadily built a cult following among Canberrans seeking quality, timeless pieces.

Designer Alice Leda Pettirosso says her aim was to design and make unique, limited-edition knitwear with a focus on luxurious fabrics such as super-soft merino wool, silk, linen, cotton, alpaca, mohair and hemp.

“The range includes scarves, wraps, coats, and ponchos made mostly of natural fibres, as well as an assortment of brooches and jewellery,” says Alice.

“We also specialise in creating custom orders for customers who find it difficult to find conventional shop-bought garments that fit well.”

In news that will be welcomed by those who are finding it hard to brave the conditions outdoors, the business has this week launched a new service called ‘Shop in a Suitcase’, where once a week they will home-deliver a range of scarves, wraps, garments and jewellery.

Alice says the service was created for two reasons: as a response to all the markets, galleries and shops that have been closed for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and for clients who are unable to drive themselves to shopping locations but still want something special made for them.

“The service is for those customers who are unable to go out for a variety of reasons but who still want to shop and, especially, feel the beautiful knit fabrics,” says Alice.

Deliveries for Shop in a Suitcase will occur every Wednesday throughout the local Canberra area.

For those who want to visit the Nullarbor Nights Studio and Gallery in person, Alice assures us everything has been done to meet current COVID-19 conditions, with hand sanitisers available and, of course, physical distancing applying.
