Gadgets, grooming and style: A workshop for the modern man

Posted on

It’s one of Australia’s most popular men’s websites today, but D’Marge founder Luc Wiesman reveals it all started as a “silly hobby.”

“[At the time] I was bored, really bored…but I liked nice things and wanted to write about them,” says Luc.

“We now have around 100,000 visitors a month, eight full-time staff and over twenty contributors. We produce 15 stories a day of which 3-4 are in-depth features and interviews…it’s become a bit of a beast.”

Described as “the ultimate online edit for the modern man”, D’Marge is the place to visit for everything to do with men’s style and fashion, along with technology, interiors, grooming, and motors.

This week Luc will present a men’s style and tech workshop at Canberra Centre, covering a range of topics from fashion trends to gadgets. Guests can finish off the evening at the QT Grooming Station followed by a gentleman’s cocktail class hosted by Lucky’s Speakeasy.

“The general idea of the workshop is to impart knowledge in a way that men develop tools,” says Luc.

“Putting pants on one leg at a time is probably a good starting point, then who knows what will happen after that?”

Luc’s hot tips for this season’s trends for men include cotton suits, Adidas Stan Smith sneakers and man-jewellery.

“Most importantly the Adidas sneakers were the trend throughout Europe this spring,” he says.

His number one style crime?

“White socks and dress shoes with a suit is pretty bad,” Luc says.

“Back socks and runners should also be a crime.”

When I ask Luc whether men are more style-conscious today, he admits he’s “had to” be.

“Like anything if you spend every day looking at sneakers, suits and cars you become more in tune with form and function,” he says.

To be honest I’m still as shallow as a kiddie pool. I would swap a girlfriend for the latest pair of Nikes.”
