There’s something about Spring that brings out the inner ‘DIY-er’ in everyone. But we’re not…
How exactly do you run Canberra’s biggest market in a pandemic? You move it online, where it becomes more successful than ever, of course.
Next weekend on Saturday 11 July, instead of crowds of gleeful shoppers sipping mulled wine as they browse handmade clothing, artwork, jewellery and homewares at Exhibition Park, Handmade’s Winter Market will be held virtually.
But that doesn’t mean your experience will change—in fact, I’m sure many shoppers will appreciate the chance to finally wear trackpants and ugg boots to Handmade. Heck, you can even supply your own mulled wine!

We’re so excited to have @saltedtouch join us at the next Virtual Market! Their luxurious sea salt body scrubs will leave your skin silky smooth with a radiant glow – perfect for tackling that winter dryness! ❄️ 🥰 They’re made using all natural, organic ingredients, and are handmade with love in Sydney. Make a note to put them on your shopping list for July 11!
From 9 am–9 pm, shoppers can browse wares from 300+ makers from across Australia from the comfort of their home, in what is easily the cosiest way to shop Australian-made. It’s also an amazing way to support small businesses and makers for whom opportunity to sell face to face all but disappeared during COVID.
“There is no doubt that what we’re doing at the moment is making a huge difference to small businesses,” says Handmade Managing Director Julie Nichols.
“The feedback from our stallholders tells us they need all the help they can get right now, and we’re happy that we’re able to give it.”
Stallholders will be offering special deals and discounts that will only be available between 9 am and 9 pm on the 11th—and will only appear once the market is set live.
The legendary food and drink section of the market will be online too, with a focus on winter goodies like chai and hot chocolate from Chai Addict and Canberra’s own Hansel & Gretel respectively, and bar cart essentials like gin, vodka and schnapps from Bathurst Grange Distillery, Natural Distilling Co and Underground Spirits.

New to Handmade from the rolling hills of Gippsland in Victoria, @naturaldistillingco produce premium spirits distilled with hemp. Their first batch was created in founder Rhys Staley’s grandfather’s old dairy vat, and the past three years have been spent learning, tinkering and tasting, using a variety of nutritious local ingredients to refine the spirits and their unique profiles. Looking to try their gin or vodka for yourself? Pick some up during the Virtual Market on July 11!
You can shop on any digital device, but a hot tip is to shop on your tablet or computer for the best user experience.
After two incredibly successful virtual markets since the start of COVID, Julie is looking forward to another fun-filled day of supporting Australia’s small makers—and providing Canberrans with a little retail therapy, of course.
“We all still need a regular Handmade fix!” laughs Julie.
