Looking for a dream home with heart? The Strathnairn Charity House is now open for inspection

Beyond a cathedral-like entry hall, warm timber accents and bright welcoming family spaces, a team of predominantly women have created a charity house that will give over a million dollars to three local charities.

In an industry where less than one per cent of tradespeople are women, Kane Constructions ACT General Manager Jo Farrell says the Strathnairn Charity House project is a tangible demonstration of the opportunities available to women in the sector.

“A female architect and builder led the project, but, more importantly, most subcontractors and trades used were either owned or staffed by women. The successful Master Builders ACT and SPARK Ginninderry JobTrainer Women in Trades Program also used the project as a live training site,” explains Jo.

The home itself—which will open for its first inspection today— features four bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms and a double garage, and was built with almost one million dollars’ worth of donated materials and labour from Master Builders ACT members.

And with the cost of building supplies skyrocketing, working through a pandemic and a La Niña weather event, this has been no small feat from this incredibly dedicated group of people.

“We had the luck of building through one of the wettest weather patterns events we have seen in a decade. It was either raining or we were mopping up water or trekking through mud for most of the days,” says Jo.

“This has been the most challenging but the most joyous project I have ever had the honour to work on.”

Designed to be a multi-generational home, there is more than enough space to watch your family grow and flourish as you settle into your new sanctuary overlooking the Brindabellas.

“With 330sqm of living space, the split-level design with the potential for intergenerational living includes four oversized bedrooms, large flowing living spaces, two kitchens, three bathrooms, a study and an outdoor entertainment area complete with outdoor kitchen. This home is a reflection of the passion of the team involved,” says Ginninderry Project Director Steve Harding.

There are quiet nooks to escape the hustle and bustle, a large kitchen bench for all the chaos of mornings and a perfectly-designed outdoor entertaining area for festive summer dinners, complete with outdoor kitchen.

With the cost living rising steadily, Hands Across Canberra Chief Executive Peter Gordon says the impact of auction proceeds for the selected charities, and the communities they serve, will be significant.

“These are organisations that are making a genuine difference in our community and I can’t wait to see the ripple effect of these significant donations,” he says.

Pegasus Riding for the Disabled, Karinya House and Canberra City Care Charnwood will all be receiving funds from what is anticipated to be a record-breaking sale out in Strathnairn.
