Myth Busting: Facial Hair Removal!

Posted on

There are things about getting older that we all get warned about, like: wrinkles, pigmentation and grey hairs; however, one thing I was never told was how much facial hair would invade my life (and my face!. Facial hair can be something that you may feel ashamed about, but one of the reasons I wanted to write this post was to let you know: a) it’s normal; b) it’s far more common than we all let on; and c) there are plenty of things you can do about it!

Over my many years as a makeup artist, I have chatted to many women on this subject, and one of the things I have noticed is that there are many misconceptions about the removal of this hair – especially the belief that removing it at all will see it come back darker and thicker. So, please, let me bust some myths for you on the touchy subject of facial hair removal, and recommend some really wonderful products to try for yourself.

Waxing

A quick wax can cure all your facial hair problems! I have heard that some ladies believe that waxing their facial hair will ensure it will grow back darker and thicker but this is completely incorrect. Waxing will actually help to reduce hair growth, because it is removed by the root and causes the hair to grow back thinner and softer!

No need to go to your beauty therapist to do it either, there are plenty of great home strip wax kits you can purchase from the super market…but make sure you have the guts to actually rip those suckers off!

Hair Removal Creams (depilatory creams)

I have tried a few hair removal creams in my time and they are quite painless, quick and convenient to use; however, if you have sensitive skin, you can find that they will leave your skin red and tortured. The hair grows back exactly as it was growing, so it does not last as long as waxing.

Bleaching

Bleaching your facial hair used to be a popular option, and if you have facial hair that isn’t very long or thick but just happens to be dark, then it is a great option to try out. However, you have to make sure you follow the instructions, because a bad bleach job can make the hair more obvious than if you were to do nothing.

Sally Hansen Facial Hair Bleach is loved by many ladies – RRP $18.99

Threading
Threading is incredibly popular right now! It is much more mild on the skin than waxing and it’s way faster than plucking – but the hair is removed in very similar way, pulling the hair out by the roots.

Shaving

Most beauty professionals will implore you not to shave your facial hair. It may seem like the quick and painless hair removal option, but the blunt cutting of the hair means that when it grows back it looks thicker than it was before. I’m not here to tell you not to do it if you feel it’s the right choice for you, although I do also believe waxing, bleaching or hair removal creams would do a much better job than the trusty razor.
I hope this has helped you to understand that facial hair is normal and everyone will deal with it at some time in their life. If you don’t want to deal with the hair on your own, just go see your local beauty therapist and they will help you out!
