Last year, POP Canberra caused a stir when it sprinkled a little bit of local gifting magic on NewActon. Now it’s back with two locations!
Stocking a colourful and eclectic array of homewares, décor, jewellery, tea, wine, spirits and chocolate, POP Canberra’s offerings were diverse but had one thing in common—they were all made by Canberra locals.
The original concept was for a simple pop-up store that would run the month of December to provide local gifting options for the festive season. But after a huge 2018 that saw POP extend trading all the way until June, the brand is set to expand with not one, but two, spaces for Christmas 2019—on Braddon’s Lonsdale Street and on Allara Street in the city.
“Last year we had so much support from Canberra that we’ve decided to come back with twice the love—with two stores!” says co-founder Gabe Trew. “We’ll be opening in Braddon and the city and have more than 105 all-Canberra brands.”
So, what might they include? According to Gabe, customers can expect “anything from perfume, high-end jewellery, watches, ceramics, food and a wall of local spirits, wine and beer—we’ll be housing the widest range of products you can imagine.”
Because of the popularity of workshops and events held in POP’s 2018 space, Gabe adds there will also be a dedicated workshop space “for people to learn unique skills” and encourages people to keep their eyes on POP’s Instagram for details.
POP Canberra co-founder Mikhaila Pennell explains that both stores will offer generous opening hours, with POP Canberra’s Lonsdale Street open seven days a week from 9.30 am, and only closing when “the last soul walks down Lonsdale Street—we’ve got you covered until at least 10 pm.”
With Gabe and Mikhaila both local business owners themselves (Crush Skincare Co and Tea Garden Co respectively), they understand that accessibility is the key to making shopping local the natural choice for Canberrans.
“We can’t wait to see so many new people, chat about local business and make an impact that matters in our local community,” says Gabe.
“We opened POP to celebrate Canberra and to support makers, artists and local business. It’s so rewarding to see locals thrive and we couldn’t be prouder of Canberra and how you’ve showed up and celebrated with us.”
POP will be opening tonight with a free launch party from 6 pm at the Lonsdale Street location and opening on Allara Street Monday morning.
Attendees will be the first to get their hands-on festive gifting goodies (or maybe just pick up a few local treats for themselves) but they’ll also be able to experience POP Canberra’s newest offering—a selection of products exclusive to POP Canberra, at both stores.
“We’re so excited to be sharing a POP exclusive section with you all this year— products that are only available instore,” says Gabe. “We also have a whole bunch of giveaways, competitions and videos over on Instagram. Follow along and watch the wild adventure unfold.”
