Seven ideas for a vintage shopping trail in Fyshwick

If your idea of fun is poking around Canberra antique stores for pre-loved items in search of treasure or simply being more sustainable, then you need to delve into the suburb of Fyshwick and join the vintage trail.

‘Industrial eclectic’ is the perfect description for this suburb, once renowned for used car yards, fireworks retailers and adult shops.

Fyshwick has since evolved and is the perfect place to while away a few hours on the hunt for a bargain or collectable with a mysterious story.

Designer Op Shop Emporium

Canberra owned, the Designer Op Shop Emporium on Lyell Street is a collective of businesses specialising in vintage and modern fashion and interiors. Formerly a smaller shop on Lonsdale Street in Braddon, this much larger location in Fyshwick allows its gems to shine.

A beautiful store, the DOS Emporium features Luxe and Beau (locally designed cushions and modern fashion accessories), Blissiimo (vintage and unique treasures), Antica (African collections), Chysanthi Vintage (clothing), Eight Stems (florist), Jilly’s Vintage (collectables) and more.

You can also grab lunch, a sweet treat and coffee or tea at the in-house Espresso Emporium.

Good quality designer clothing and accessories can be found at the large Material Pleasures shop on Barrier Street in Fyshwick.

You can be guaranteed of good quality, contemporary and recent season designer items from established and up-and-coming designers. You never know what you’ll find.

The shop is open Monday to Friday but closed on public holidays.

Dirty Janes Canberra

The new kid on the block, Dirty Janes Canberra, is a goldmine for treasure hunters.

Sister to its namesake in Bowral, the warehouse features 90 boutique stalls selling anything and everything you can imagine that is vintage, retro, classic, handcrafted and antique. Among the wares include furniture, art, clothing, designer jewellery, pottery, homewares and flowers.

Tucked in behind Domayne, it’s open daily and also features 1910 Ironworks where you can see a blacksmith in action.

If you’ve worked up an appetite, you can grab a coffee or bite to eat from Billy T’s Larder Canberra after all that shopping.

Salvation Army Fyshwick

A short distance from the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets on Mildura Street is Salvation Army Fyshwick store.

Open Monday through Saturday, the store sells everything from bric-a-brac to clothing, toys, furniture, books and more.

Antique stores in Fyshwick

Canberra Antiques Centre.

If you’re looking for a classic piece of furniture, jewellery or vintage clothing that has withstood the test of time, then a scout around Fyshwick’s antique shops are in order.

Fox Antiques at 51 Collie Street has a long history in Canberra and its owner Charlie offers a wealth of knowledge about antiques.

Down Memory Lane at 34 Geelong Street is known for its antiques, vintage and retro collectables. There’s everything from china to books, furniture, glassware and more.

Located at 37 Townsville Street, Canberra Antiques Centre, is also home to Out of the Ark vintage clothing and accessories, part of its wider collection and is another great spot to forage for a find. It’s located at 37 Townsville Street.
