As the National Archives of Australia explores the work of Muslim designers and entrepreneurs and the way it interacts with mainstream fashion in their current exhibition — Faith, Fashion, Fusion — we take a closer look at hijab style.
It may be cold out, but winter has to be one of my favourite times of the fashion calendar. It’s the perfect time to spoil ourselves with gorgeous scarves, decadent outerwear and wonderfully warm knits that positively exude comfort and cosiness.
While the temperatures might be dropping outside, here are some great tips to help you stay warm, stylish and modest – read on to discover some of my favourite winter hijab styles.
Go Elegant in Fur

To style yourself up in fur this winter, why not add a luxe fur accent to your outfit? The flowing lines of a fur-trimmed poncho give an understated touch of glam, while a fur collar coat looks effortlessly polished. Go for classic tones – nudes, soft grey, brown or black look timeless and stylish, and match your hijab scarf with muslin outerwear for a complete look.
Less is definitely more when it comes to this style – we recommend sticking to a plain or lightly patterned scarf, so you can let your fur accent really stand out.
Get chunky
Nothing quite says winter than the sight of a delicious chunky knit – and we really love to snuggle up under them when it gets cold.
Chunkier knits can look unflattering and bulky though – so to stay stylish while you keep warm, make sure the look is all about balance.
Try adding a knitted scarf wound around your neck over your hijab – and match the colour of both scarves to keep the look consistent.
Or for another twist on chunky knitwear, why not pair your hijab with a turtleneck jumper or tunic? Keep it slightly oversized for modesty and comfort, and tuck your scarf in at the top – wonderfully warm, and a really sweet look.
Pretty in pashminas

When it’s extra chilly outside, sometimes all you want to do is curl up under your duvet and hibernate until spring.
Well, this style is probably the next best thing. Plus – you get to look pretty fabulous too.
Instead of styling your usual lighter scarf and then bundling up with extra layers on top, why not switch things up by using a lovely pashmina scarf to style your hijab instead?
Pashminas tend to be much longer and thicker than most other scarves – which means they can end up looking bulky. To keep your style on point, wrap your hijab in soft folds around your head and shoulders. This will create a beautiful soft cocoon that frames your face perfectly, and leaves a gently draping fold to cover your chest too.
Best of all, you can get as creative as you like with this look, by playing with different prints and patterns. Go for a bold colour clash with a contrasting coat, or play it cool in tonal hues.
Layer it up
Last but not least – here’s a chance to flex your creative muscles. Layered hijabs can look incredibly sophisticated and regal – those lush folds of fabric remind us of a rather fabulous looking crown.
Try working with two contrasting coloured scarves, wrapping each one carefully to create an alternating pattern. There are all sorts of ways to create this look –from a wreath of delicate petal folds to bold criss-cross styles. Have a play and have fun styling this up!
But if you’d like try a simpler take on this trend, then another great way to wear this look is by adding a subtle peek of colour under your hijab. Contrast your underscarf and hijab and show off the look by revealing a sliver of colour from below, or pair a funky printed scarf with a plain layer beneath, in a complementing shade.
One thing’s for sure – it may be cold, but winter is definitely the perfect time to play with your hijab style. With so many different ways to wear it, you can stay modest, and get as creative as you like.
How will you be styling your hijab this winter – and what’s your favourite way to brave the winter blasts? We’d love to know what you think and hear from you!
