Zilpah Tart’s new collection makes waves

It was the inspiration of the nation’s capital that saw Zilpah Tart first burst onto Canberra’s fashion scene.
But now, with stockists in Queensland and Melbourne, it is the ocean which has inspired designer Yumi Morrissey’s brand new summer collection.
After taking her fashion design business fulltime in 2013 and the success of her Fashfest debut in 2015, Yumi has continued to create fun and unique pieces, and her 2018 Spring/Summer collection is no exception.
Shoreline, which will launch at CARDIF Collective in Westfield Woden on September 7, is again full of bright colours and bold prints. Taking a new approach and using a drone to take photos of the ocean, Yumi digitally printed her pictures onto the fabric.
She has used the contrast of coastal colours and sheer fabrics to create a fun and feminine line. Her favourite piece is an asymmetrical dress with sheer fabric across the shoulders. “I really love this one print, the colours are just so pretty,” she says.
She moved away from Canberra’s usual inspiration for her pieces to broaden her horizons as a designer.
“I’m looking more towards creating things that are really beautiful in the prints, and not so much just Canberra.”
Fear not though, Zilpah Tart lovers.
“There will always be Canberra prints because it is where I live and take most of my photos.”
So, what’s next for fashion label? While looking for a stockist in Sydney for her current line, Yumi has also revealed that Zilpah Tart will be launching its very own activewear line in late October. Yumi’s signature prints and bold colours on workout gear seems like a match made in heaven.
“I am a very active person, so it really fits into my lifestyle,” says Yumi.
Following the launch, Shoreline will be available online, at Tienda Canberra at the Fyshwick Niche markets, and you can also get your hands on the pieces at the Handmade Markets on October 20 and 21.
