Raw inspiration: Sabrina’s story

Once the diagnosis was made, life began to make more sense to Sabrina Muscat.

Sabrina hadn’t been well for years and had just about given up on falling pregnant. She found some solace in an Instagram account she started, sharing her story and interacting with friends, new and old. In early 2013, Sabrina was presented with startling news by her doctor. She had Stage 4 endometriosis, a painful condition affecting between 25 and 50 per cent of infertile women.

Fast forward to 2016. Sabrina has a beautiful baby boy. Her Instagram account has a whopping 73,200 followers (no boosting or buying fans) and her Facebook account is growing in leaps and bounds. Her Rawspirations website is ‘uber active’ and she’s about to publish her first cookbook. Did we mention she’s soon to host her first event with Therese Kerr, author, speaker and founder of The Divine Company from Sydney?

The Divine Rawspirations High Tea Event explores why thyroid challenges and other hormone-related disorders are so common these days. Sabrina, when diagnosed, had to learn a lot about endometriosis, and quick sharp because there were big decisions to make. Endometriosis is where tissue from the membrane that normally lines the uterus—the endometrium—grows outside the uterus, typically on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines or other areas in the pelvis.

“My endometriosis had spread through most of my organs and I was told I had very little chance of ever falling pregnant. In fact, if I was to have any chance of having children, I should begin a six-month course of a hormone therapy and type of chemotherapy used to treat conditions such as ovarian and prostate cancer,” says Sabrina. “Once treatment was completed, I would then only have a couple of months to try and fall pregnant before the endometriosis would start growing back.”

Sabrina thought long and hard about what she describes as a treatment that would equate to ‘six months of tough times, only to be given a slim chance of falling pregnant’.

“In my mind I had three options,” she says. “Give this crazy treatment a go without much hope, and run my body down in the process; forget about having children and continue living in pain; go back to basics and look at the underlying reasons my body wasn’t happy.”

Backed by her ongoing studies in nutritional science and her skills as a fully qualified life coach, Sabrina followed her head and her heart. With strong support from her naturopath, she began a diet of predominantly raw and vegan organic foods. Six months later she was pregnant and even more motivated to continue sharing her story with other women in a similar situation.

“I’m not a preacher and believe that what worked for me may not work for everyone,” says Sabrina. “But I felt I could continue to use Rawspirations to motivate others to think health eating and living.” A main feature of Rawspirations are recipes which Sabrina dishes up with glorious photos.

The ever-growing collection of savoury and sweet dishes, which Sabrina has trialled and tested, are predominantly raw or baked vegan and vegetarian—all organic and dairy-free, gluten-free and refined sugar-free. This is good food that is a feast for the eyes and big on taste. Recent recipes are for divine rainbow sushi rolls, baked purple, sweet potato wedges with smashed avocado, polenta and corn fritters, and quinoa tabouleh salad. And don’t feel that healthy eating means you have to give up sweets. Make yourself a cuppa and enjoy a slice of zesty, raw vegan lemon tart or a moist chocolate chip and macadamia chocolate muffin. Rawspirations_1 The Divine Rawspirations High Tea Event will open your eyes to the impact of chemicals in every day food and other products, including beauty products. It will explore why disorders like endometriosis, infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome and estrogen dominance (in men and women) are such an issue in modern society.

It also explores why it can be so hard to lose those extra few kilos no matter what you do. Sabrina will talk about how easy it is to eat well without compromising on food variety, presentation or taste. Therese, a powerful keynote speaker who was voted one of Australia’s Top 50 Most Influential Women of 2015 and Organic Industry Leader of 2015, will also be informative and motivating. She has had endometriosis and had her spleen removed in 2002, having discovered she had tumours in the organ.

Therese started researching what she was putting in and on her body and her journey led her to start The Divine Company, a line of certified organic beauty and personal care products. The High Tea isn’t all serious business. It’s a chance to meet new people and indulge in a mouth-watering raw and baked vegan and vegetarian buffet. The High Tea will feature raw and baked vegan and vegetarian sweet and savoury treats, as well as organic wine, champagne and cold pressed juices.

 

Sweet Potato Fries with Spicy Avocado & Hummus Gauc ? Ingredients ✖️For the fries 1 large sweet potato cut into fries 2 tbs of olive oil 1/2 tsp of pink himalayan salt 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp garlic powder ✖️For the hummus 1 1/2 cup chickpeas 1 cup of avocado 1/4 cup of filtered water 2 cloves of garlic 2 tbs of fresh squeezed lime juice 1 tbs of cilantro 1/4 tsp of cayenne 1/4 tsp of salt. ✖️Directions 1. Add cut potatoes in a bowl with olive oil and seasonings and stir until potatoes are coated evenly and place in oven on 425 F for 15 minutes. 2. Flip fries and bake for another 15-20 minutes. While fries are in the oven add all hummus ingredients into a blender or food processor. 3. Blend ingredients together until smooth. Place hummus into a bowl and garnish with cayenne pepper and chikpeas. 4. Once time is up remove fries from oven. Allow 5 minutes to cool and garnish with fresh squeezed lime juice and fresh cracked black pepper. Enjoy! ? Recipe by @3.bunnies

Sabrina’s passion is palpable. “A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence,” she says. “Be persistent with whatever you believe in. And stop waiting for someday. There is no someday. There’s only today.”
