Fly high at Canberra Airport Open Day

Feel the need for speed?
With jaw-dropping aerial displays, historic war birds and detector dog demonstrations, Top Gun tragics and aviation enthusiasts alike will be in their element at this year’s Canberra Airport Open Day.
This year’s jam-packed event, held on Sunday 8 April, includes aircraft display, children’s activities, food stores and entertainment.
A selection of historic war birds—including three nanchangs—will perform aerial displays, and Australia’s top aviator Matt Hall will also perform his breathtaking aerial displays throughout the day.
Hall is the first Australian to ever compete in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, and is a former fighter pilot.
Canberra Airport’s Head of Marketing and Communications Melissa Evans says he is an exciting addition to this year’s line-up.
“There’s such a buzz during aerobatic displays,” Melissa says.
“It’s loud, it’s exciting and gives the community a chance to see aircraft they wouldn’t usually see over the skies of Canberra.”
Guests will also get the rare chance to climb on board planes from Qantas, QantasLink, Virgin Australia and the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society.
Melissa says they are expecting around 20,000 people at what is the airport’s eighth open day since 2004.
“Canberra Airport is embedded in the Canberra community so it’s important that we hold these free events to give back to the community that supports us,” she says.
“Canberra Airport Open Day also allows people to go inside an aircraft who may never get the chance to fly on a commercial passenger plane. When you’re standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up, you realise how truly enormous some of these aircraft are. It’s almost magical to think that these large machines can fly.”
Changes are in store for this year’s event, with longer opening hours, a larger venue at the western end of the airfield, and a ticketing system. There will also be a free park-and-ride shuttle bus service from the City and Russell.
And while the event is free, organisers say it’s essential that you book a ticket so you don’t miss out.
