Yarralumla’s amazing new maze to attract new generations of explorers

Posted on

Hands up those Canberrans who remember entering the giant Koppers log maze at Weston Park and wondering if they would ever make it out the other side?

Well it’s time to get your active wear on as something bigger and better is opening in its place.

The owner of Yarralumla Play Station Jason Perkins knows a thing or two about mazes, as he has spent over 12 years trying to negotiate ACT Government bureaucracy in order to bring the iconic Canberra attraction back to life.

The Maze Reimagined is finally ready for exploration, rekindling the concept of the city’s original giant a wooden maze, constructed from 4000 Koppers logs and first opened to the public in 1980 but closed by 2006 after general wear and tear (having attracted half a million visitors).

One side of four. It goes on forever!

Jason’s vision is considerably more ambitious than the original maze, which was built by  public servant Peter Batum as part of the Department of the Capital Territory’s effort to turn Weston Park into a major recreational point for the city.

It contains several  special features sure to wow new generations of curious kids (and their befuddled parents).

Built over 12 months and creating 2.4 kilometres of (sometimes infuriating) pathways interspersed with games, forts and puzzles, this is an attraction you can’t really rush. In fact, the maze is so huge you could conceivable get lost for most of the day.

Yarralumla Park or Disco fever dream. Who can tell?

Spanning four acres, the Maze precinct includes an Infinity Room – a mesmerising space where mirrors and light create the illusion of endless reflections, the Hive Maze – a maze within a maze, filled with multiple pathways and decision points that challenge visitors to find their way through. There is also an Infinity Cube – a curious structure where perspective and design create playful illusions and unexpected discoveries.

Suffice to say there is lots to see and do and hours of exploration to be had.

“This project has been a true labour of love,” says Jason.

“The original maze holds special memories for so many Canberrans. To be able to rebuild it and see families, children and visitors enjoying it again is incredibly rewarding. It’s about bringing something special back to Canberra.”

The Grand Opening of The MAZE – Reimagined at Yarralumla Play Station will take place on Saturday 28 March, with gates opening at 9:30am.

The view inside an infinity cube. Just don’t drop your phone!

And if kilometres of wooden tunnels is not your thing then there are always the accompanying activities of visiting and feeding the Farm Friends, playing a round of mini golf or two or simply sending your energetic kids into the maze and then spending an hour or two enjoying coffee and snacks in the café while they find their way out. IF they find their way out…

The opening will feature a live DJ, free facepainting and a special visit by Dusty the Dinosaur (who will, apparently be hiding in the maze at some point with prizes awarded for discovering them…)
