The Canberra organisers who helped me let go of 50 per cent of my wardrobe (and my shopping habit)

There’s one in every family whose closet could do with a good clean-out. Hi, that’s me.
If you’ve ever found yourself fishing a dress out of your mum’s wardrobe, rummaging through a tub in your sister’s room, or buying a whole new outfit because you simply couldn’t find the one you already owned, this one’s for you.
I’m Georgie, HerCanberra’s Digital Content Producer, and I recently had my wardrobe completely transformed by the team at Lótus Organising. Here’s how it went.
Ever since I was young, I’ve loved dressing up. My mum loves to remind me that I’d change my outfit up to three times a day as a kid. I went to a uniform-free high school and college, which only gave me more freedom to express myself through what I wore.
But somewhere along the way, the joy of dressing up became something a little more complicated. Every new event called for a new outfit. Every crappy day meant a trip to the shops or a cheeky online browse in the hope that something new might make me feel better.
The truth? I had too much, and I’d consumed too much. And I wasn’t ready to admit that until I had clothes spilling out of my room, into my sister’s room, and into my mum’s room, barely organised and living in baskets.
I needed help. So, I called in the big guns.

Jasmine, Fernanda and Rafa from Lotus Organising.
The team from Lótus Organising arrived with a warmth that immediately put me at ease. Jasmine, Rafa, and Fernanda felt less like a professional organising crew and more like family – their energy is so comforting.
Lótus Organising is a Canberra-based business born from a deeply personal story. The team behind it know what it’s like to start over in a new country, working long hours, studying, managing visas, raising families, and doing it all far from their support networks. Through those experiences, they discovered how much a calm, functional home can ease stress and bring familiarity. As certified professional organisers, they bring that real-life understanding to every space they touch, creating practical systems that are built to last.
Before the big day, Jas came to my home for an initial consultation. We had a tea, took notes, and she measured the space. She asked me about my lifestyle, what I reached for most, and how I actually live in my room. She didn’t make me feel bad about the chaos; she empathised and empowered me to make a change. By the end of that first visit, she had a foolproof (or should I say Georgie-proof) plan to make everything accessible.

We culled a lot of shoes.
This experience was so much more than professional organising. Jas sat with me and went through every single piece of clothing. She listened when I told her the memory behind a certain item. She rationalised with me when I desperately wanted to keep something.
And she’d ask: “Georgie, when was the last time you wore this?”
It wasn’t about getting rid of things; it was about rethinking why I felt the need to buy everything in the first place.
On the big day, Jas, Rafa and Fernanda the team arrived loaded with tubs, organisers, dividers, bangle holders, racks, and frames. They managed to fit everything (yes, everything) into my room and my sister’s wardrobe (a silver lining of having a sibling who’s moved out). They even found a way to tuck our heavy traditional Indian sarees and lehengas into the storage underneath my bed. I couldn’t believe the way Jas had envisioned my space. It was like she knew me better than I knew myself.

One thing I didn’t expect to be fascinated by? Folding. The team used a Brazilian folding card technique that made everything so compact and visible – no more digging to the bottom of a pile to find what you need.
It sounds small, but it’s the kind of detail that makes the whole system work. I have purchased an Australian version from Paty Barbarotto.

Ordem cromática (Portuguese) refers to chromatic order, which means arranging your clothes by colour, following a spectrum sequence.
Jas shared something that’s stuck with me:
“Remember: one per cent better every day. A few small changes and little adjustments to your routine will create not only more space in your wardrobe, but also more space and clarity in your mind.”
She reminded me to be kind to the new system, to adjust it as needed, and not to stress if things shift. They’d also intentionally left a little extra breathing room in the wardrobe, just in case. (Though, as Jas gently pointed out, I definitely don’t need more space or clothes!)
Reducing 50 per cent of my clothes, shoes, and belongings felt like an incredible achievement. And the next morning, getting dressed for work felt intentional for the first time in a long time. I could find everything. I wasn’t overwhelmed. The weight I’d been carrying literally and figuratively had lifted.
Cluttered space really does equal a cluttered mind.

My going-out dresses and most of my gorgeous handbags.
