The best organic grocers and wholefood stores in Canberra

Posted on

Trying to shop a little greener, fresher, or more locally this year?

Canberra is packed with organic grocers, bulk food stores, and wholefood havens that make healthy shopping feel a little less intimidating and a lot more delicious.

From long-running community co-ops to tucked-away stores filled with the smell of fresh bread and incense, these are Canberra’s best organic spots worth adding to your grocery rotation.

Eddie’s Organic Grocer & Cafe (Pearce)

One of Canberra’s newest additions to the organic scene, Eddie’s Organic Grocer & Cafe is already shaping up to be a local favourite before officially opening its doors.

Built around the idea of great coffee, wholesome food, community, and fresh organic produce, the upcoming space promises to blend café culture with conscious shopping.

While details are still emerging, it’s one to keep on your radar if you love discovering Canberra’s next hidden gem before everyone else does. Because honestly, can Canberra ever really have too many cute cafés with organic groceries attached?

Organic Energy (Griffith)

Tucked into the Griffith Shops, Organic Energy has been a Canberra favourite since 1986, and once you step inside, it’s easy to see why.

The shelves are stacked with certified organic fruit and vegetables, dried goods, raw treats, supplements, and locally sourced produce, with plenty coming straight from nearby farms during the warmer months.

Their house-made raw vegan range has developed something of a cult following, featuring everything from kale chips and chia cups to mousse cakes and ice cream.

If you’re someone who loves the idea of healthy eating but hates the effort, they also offer home delivery across Canberra and surrounding regions.

Mountain Creek Wholefoods & Bakery (Griffith)

Walking into Mountain Creek Wholefoods & Bakery feels a little like stepping into another world. One filled with the smell of roast nuts, fresh pastries, incense, and warm timber.

Hidden away in Griffith, the beloved store has been serving the Canberra community for more than 40 years and has built a reputation for its thoughtful range of organic foods, supplements, natural beauty products, yoga essentials and sustainable homewares.

The recycled timber shelves and handcrafted feel give the space a warmth that chain stores simply cannot replicate. And if you leave without buying something from the bakery, honestly, you’re stronger than the rest of us.

Choku Bai Jo (Lyneham)

If farmers’ market produce is your love language, Choku Bai Jo deserves a spot on your must-visit list.

Created to connect Canberra shoppers directly with growers and producers, the store stocks fresh produce from farmers both at and beyond the markets, making it easier to access seasonal ingredients throughout the week.

It has a relaxed, community-focused feel that makes grocery shopping surprisingly enjoyable, and the produce selection changes regularly depending on what’s in season. Think less supermarket convenience and more ‘accidentally buying the best tomatoes of your life’.

Canberra Food Co-op (City)

Equals parts grocery store, cafe and community hub, the Canberra Food Co-op has been operating since 1976 and remains one of the city’s best spots for low-waste and ethically sourced shopping.

The shelves are filled with bulk foods, organic groceries and household products, all with a strong focus on affordability and sustainability.

Beyond the groceries, there’s a genuine community atmosphere here, with events, shared values, and a cafe that makes lingering a little too easy.

Whether you’re fully committed to the low-waste lifestyle or just bulk-buying pasta to survive the month, this place makes sustainable shopping feel approachable.

The Source Bulk Foods (Dickson)

For anyone trying to reduce waste without giving up convenience, The Source Bulk Foods in Dickson is a game changer. The family-owned store is packed with pantry staples, snacks, teas, dried fruits, chocolates, and just about every grain or nut imaginable, all available in bulk!

It’s the kind of place where you walk in intending to buy oats and somehow leave with five different types of chocolate covered almonds.

The team are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about low-waste living, making it a great option whether you’re knew to bulk shopping or already bringing jars everywhere you go.

Greenhill Farm (Bungendore)

While not technically a traditional grocery store, Greenhill Organic Farm is well worth knowing about if you want truly local organic produce.

Fully certified organic and biodynamic, the farm grows seasonal vegetables using methods designed to support healthy ecosystems and nutrient-rich soil. And yes, they apparently taste the way vegetables are actually supposed to taste.

You can find their produce at the Capital Region Farmers Market every Saturday, as well as through Southern Harvest produce boxes.

There’s something incredibly reassuring about buying vegetables from people who clearly care this much about the land they grow them on.
