Trends ahead: What we’ll be wearing in 2016

Posted on

Crop tops, flares and 1970s patterns were among the looks that defined 2015. But what will we be seeing in 2016?

Canberra stylist Jessica Rolfe, who regularly styles looks for fashion magazines in Canberra and interstate, says brimmed hats, neck ties and flared shirts are just some of the looks she expects to be seeing on the streets.

“I find that the trends are becoming more and more minimal such as white, black and grey are becoming more the staple colours everyone wears these days,” Jessica says.

“I found myself wearing them especially this year. I love the boho style that’s trending this year with labels such as Lack of Colours, The Lair, Hansen & Gretel, Incu and Acne. There will be lots of ripped jeans, loose fitting blouses, and lace bralets.”

When it comes to incorporating new trends into your current wardrobe, Jessica says it’s best to “keep it simple.”

“I love simple, delicate jewellery like Sarah & Sebastian when layering an outfit,” she says.

“The neck tie has become quite popular this year when adding to your look as well. I find that this season we’re going for more of a chunky palette when it comes to footwear like this season Manning Cartell’s, Willow and of course the perfect staple biker boot by Acne.”

When looking for some insta-inspiration, celebrities such as Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Lucy Williams are good guides for this year’s boho chic style.

“Other celebrities such as Pepa Mack or Carmen Hamilton are great at that undone, edgy style,” Jessica says.

“I would consider my own style to be a mix of boho and rocker chic.”

Jessica lists Mussen, Pink Ink and Rebel Muse as her favourite local boutiques. Her styling advice is to “plan ahead.”

“I literally plan out my looks the week of – when given an event I plan out what I’m going to wear first and foremost: what shoes I’ll have, what I’ll do with my hair and if I’ll wear that new dress I got or go for a more casual approach,” she says.

“My best piece of advice however is to be true to yourself, be different, be unique, be you – that’s the best style anyone could ever wear.”
