Squash is a fast-paced ball sport played by two (singles) or four (doubles) players in a four-walled court.
Players must alternate in striking the ball with their racquet onto the front wall within the area defined by the red lines at the top and bottom of the court. One foot must be kept in the service box while serving, and the rally continues until one player hits the ball out or down, or fails to hit the ball before it has bounced twice.
The basic aim is to keep hitting the ball against the front wall. The ball can only hit the floor once between each shot, but it can hit as many walls as the player likes. A rally can also be lost if the ball hits a player or their clothing before they strike it.
In the traditional scoring system, players can only win points if they are serving. If a player receives a serves and wins, they don’t gain a point but do become the server. A point is registered when a server wins two rallies. To win a game, a player must reach nine points, and the best of three or five games wins a match.
International scoring sees games usually played to 11 or 15 points.
