How to beat the winter slump: Canberra’s hidden hub for stress and immunity support
Posted on
For many of us, the moment the winter chill hits Canberra, an unwelcome shift begins: a season spent lurching between stubborn colds and sluggishness.
And while we tend to blame the biting frosty mornings, the real culprit behind your recurring seasonal cold might actually be your calendar.
Not just an emotional burden, stress is a massive contributor to immunity. When stress becomes chronic, our nervous system remains trapped in a prolonged fight or flight state, which directly suppresses healthy immune function and our ability to fight off those pesky colds.
If you’re ready to transition out of survival mode and support your nervous system this season, the team at The H Dispensary at Griffith shops is ready to help.
As one of Canberra’s longest-standing natural health destinations, The H Dispensary offers one-on-one and over the counter naturopathic and herbal consultations, while their in-house kinesiologist Talena Benedet specialises specifically in nervous system regulation. Plus their rotating schedule of workshops and courses this winter are designed to build your immunity and restore your vitality – including sessions on clearing congestion and sluggishness and hands-on Ayurvedic Winter Kitchen and Fire Cider Crafting.
We caught up with The H Dispensary’s naturopath and nutritionist Brenda Rogers to find out how Canberrans can claim their winter wellness this season.

Listen to your body’s whispers
We’ve all been there during stressful periods: “just push through,” you tell yourself. But eventually, your body pays for it.
“In clinic, I often see women who are constantly pushing through exhaustion, caring for everyone else, and functioning on adrenaline,” Brenda says.
“Eventually the body starts whispering – through fatigue, recurrent colds, poor sleep or burnout – before it finally demands rest.”
Rather than seeing this as the body failing us, Brenda believes it’s helpful to view it as “intelligent feedback.”
“The body has been working incredibly hard to protect and sustain us through prolonged stress, and once the immediate pressure eases, it asks for rest, repair and recovery.”
Don’t accept constant stress as “normal”
Brenda believes many people underestimate how deeply stress affects the body.
“We often normalise exhaustion, poor sleep, constant rushing and nervous system overload as part of modern life, particularly for women balancing work, caregiving and emotional labour,” she says.
“Chronic stress keeps the body in a constant state of alert, almost as though it’s always preparing for danger. When this happens for weeks, months or even years, the immune system can become overstimulated and inflammatory chemicals begin circulating through the body at higher levels than normal. This means the body has fewer resources available for repair, resilience and fighting infections effectively.
“This ongoing inflammation can also make autoimmune conditions more reactive. Many people notice their symptoms flare during periods of emotional stress, poor sleep, overwork, grief or burnout.”
Brenda emphasises that health is not just about avoiding illness; it’s about creating enough safety, nourishment and restoration for the body to thrive.
“Sometimes the most powerful immune-supportive practices are also the simplest: deep rest, nourishing food, time in nature, meaningful connection, proper sleep and learning to listen to the body before it reaches burnout,” she says.
“Natural medicine can also be incredibly supportive here, not simply by suppressing symptoms, but by helping restore balance and resilience over time.”

Reclaim your winter wellness
If you’re ready to reclaim your winter wellness, help is just around the corner.
The H Dispensary’s team of qualified homeopaths, naturopaths, kinesiologist and Ayurvedic practitioners provide deeply individualised support, aiming to treat both mind and body.
“Our approach is about helping people regulate rather than simply push through,” Brenda says.
“That may include nervous system support through herbal medicine, improving sleep quality, restoring depleted nutrients, supporting digestion, creating healthier boundaries, and helping people reconnect with rhythms of rest, nourishment and recovery.
“The most important thing is that support is tailored to the individual. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to stress or healing, because every person’s story, nervous system and life experience is different.”
