Being awarded CBR Sport Awards People’s Sporting Champion Presented by Canberra Milk is kind of like winning Most Valuable Player, as voted by the entire community.

For the people of Canberra, it’s an opportunity to be involved in the CBR Sport Awards—to have your say in who you think is worthy of the title.

So what exactly are the characteristics to look for in a Sporting Champion?

“Humble, down to earth, authentic, and caring are a few characteristics we love to see in our Sporting Champions, who take the time to recognise and engage with fans and understand the impact that they have on young people” says David Tyack, Managing Director of Canberra Milk.

Officially, you can nominate anyone who you believe has achieved outstanding sporting results during the year, inspired you, given back to the ACT community beyond the confines of their sport, contributed to the promotion and development of their sport, or demonstrated positive achievements in other areas of their life.

By casting your vote for the People’s Sporting Champion, you can also elect which school or sporting club you would like to receive the $5000 sporting equipment prize.

“We believe it [the prize] is valuable for two reasons” says David. “First, being part of the Canberra community, we receive numerous phone calls for support from schools and grass roots sporting clubs. We can’t support everyone, but we try and do as much as we can, so we thought that this would be a great way to help out.”

“Secondly, if as a result of this prize it enables more kids to get out and be active, be part of a team, and take away some of the barriers of participation and ensure there is enough equipment for everyone who wants who to participate, then that can only be good.”

The partnership between the CBR Sport Awards and Canberra Milk is fitting, given the organisation’s longstanding support of the local sporting landscape. In addition to sponsoring teams like the Canberra Raiders, the Super Rugby Brumbies, Canberra Cavalry and the W-League Canberra United, Canberra Milk plays an active role in supporting community events throughout the year, including fetes, school and charity fundraisers and more.

“We also supply 20 schools across Canberra with free milk every week for their Breakfast Clubs, giving disadvantaged students the opportunity to start the day as best they can. That is why we see ourselves as not just supporting the community, but as part of the community.”

Voting for the People’s Sporting Champion will close on Monday 5 November, so make sure you lodge your vote and support Canberra’s sport community.
