Spooky season is officially upon us, and as the day of the day quickly approaches, we’ve found some eerie and exciting events in Canberra.

This year, Halloween falls on a Friday, which means there’s plenty of opportunity for some killer fun; from trivia nights that will have you howl-ing with laughter to clubs and bars calling for creatures of the night to cut loose and have some fun.

Whether your poison is dancing until dawn or binge-watching horror movies, here’s how to have some frightful fun in Canberra this Halloween…if you dare.

Spooky Stories Reading Evening

Are you a fan of strange tales? Feel compelled by all things creepy? In the lead-up to the big day, get into the Halloween spirit with this Spooky Stories session at Gang Gang café.

Complete with a night of fascinating (yet disturbing) short story readings and a short musical performance, local authors will be exploring the spectres of the past, the horrors of the present, unsettling futures, and the weird experiences of being human. Go along to hear some dark and wicked revelations.

Spooky Lane Market

Who’s ready for a spooktacular week at Verity Lane Market? This Halloween, they’re conjuring up a cauldron of exclusive dishes from their vendors, alongside fun, spooky cocktails and mocktails. With more details to come, keep an eye out.

Ninja Parc Halloween Party

Eyrie Improv – Improvised Burlesque

Get sexy and spooky this October for an extra special Halloween edition of Eyrie Improv. Wear your best costume and win prizes!

Get ready for a night of ‘Choose Your Own Adventure Burlesque’ with a cast of amazing performers. All of these acts are never to be seen again, because they are all improvised on the spot. That’s right, the audience picks the performer and the song they perform to from two hats, and then we all get to enjoy the magic (or mayhem) that ensues! See these professionals test their skills and entertain you along the way.

Halloween All Ages Social Skate

Let’s get spooky and skate! Have a bit of Halloween fun at this All Ages Social Skate.

This is not an instructed class, it’s an open session to practice and roll around with friends. A social skate session is for skaters who can comfortably roll without assistance or guidance. This is a family friendly, all ages session suitable for those aged 5 years and up.

Limited skate hire available, simply select your preferred size ticket.

Halloween Retro Silent Disco 

It’s time to disco with the dead! Head along to the National Museum of Australia for a retro silent disco where you can dance the night away to Halloween party anthems.

Transforming the Gandel Atrium into a nightclub with three amazing DJs simultaneously playing three uniquely themed DJ sets, you choose how you want to party: the 80s Countdown (think: pop, rock and synth anthems), Everything 90s (hello grunge, girl groups and guilty pleasures) or 00s Anthems (the ultimate Naughties rewind). Howl-oween Trivia Night

Looking for spooky vibes without the scary? ACT Rescue and Foster are hosting their annual trivia night and once again, they’re tapping into the Halloween spirit.

With all proceeds from the night going towards helping dogs in need, head along to enjoy a fun evening, and drop a donation off to Billy the skeleton and his rescue dog. Costumes are encouraged!

Hot Pot Burlesque: Halloween Edition

It’s time for Hot Pot Burlesque to once again bring out its dead and gather our spooky scary skeletons to send those shivers down your spine!

A show where the tease of burlesque and the comedy of vaudeville chaos come together with all things ghoulie and ghostly to entertain the audience into the dark night.

With a special guest MC lurking in the darkness to whisper scary stories in your ear, along with both local and interstate performers ready to creep into your nightmares, there really is no reason not to get along.

The night will be filled with burlesque, drag, comedy and cabaret, all happening within the atmospheric walls of The Pot Belly.

Howloween Paws Party

Your four-legged friends can get in on the fun this October with a Howloween Paws Party at Haig Park. Kicking off from 10 am, for two hours you can expect ghoulish games and haunted challenges, a trick-and-treat, live music, a photo booth and some terrifyingly good snacks.

Plus, there will be a dress-up competition that will see the spookiest pooch taking home a prize!

Fright Night

Dare to venture into Dendy’s Halloween takeover with 18 (their biggest line-up ever!) terrifying horror classics back on the big screen for one night only.

Horror Tropefest

Canberra’s spookiest horror film festival is taking over Smith’s Alternative on Halloween night, and it will be sure to get your pulse racing. Featuring bone-chilling masterpieces from local film-makers, audiences can expect shocks and spooky surprises from some amazing short films.

Doors open at 6.30 pm for early arrivals wanting to soak up the Halloween atmosphere, there will be food and drink available at the bar, and at 10 pm, you can scream (in delight) as the winner of the festival is named.

Make sure to dress up to take home the prize for best costume on the night and take your friends to make the most of the thrills and chills.

Halloween at The Bakehouse Mitchell

Ready for a spine-chilling adventure? This will be a Halloween-themed treasure hunt like no other. Hosted by the Canberra Social Singles Group, along with the scavenger hunt (with prizes for the best sleuths), there will be ice-breakers, a unique trick-or-treat game with a twist for the grown-ups and more.

It’s not Halloween in Canberra without an event at Reload, and while the bar might be closed, they’ve risen from the dead for one night only to celebrate in the old ‘new’ Transit.
