15 Christmas films you need to binge watch

Posted on

The big day is finally here – and it’s the perfect time to find a new favourite (or revisit a classic) Christmas movie.

Here’s our list of 15 holiday films to watch (and yes, we’ve checked it twice).

ELF

When you think of Christmas, it’s hard not to think of Will Ferrell’s funny and charming performance as one of Santa’s biggest helpers. Watch with the whole family for a big dose of Yuletide cheer.

Die Hard

Despite what naysayers may claim, Die Hard is indeed a Christmas film (John McClane is flying in especially for Christmas and the action takes place at a Christmas party, so there).

One for those who would rather do anything but watch a soppy Christmas film.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

It wouldn’t be Christmas without this classic film making an appearance.

Watch it for a hit of nostalgia and for some very quotable lines.

Love Actually

A classic to end all classics, Love Actually is filled to the brim with all the bittersweet realities of Christmas but also lots of giggles, teary moments and big names.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

A holiday comedy that’s sure to make you crack a smile – especially if you’re entertaining the extended family under one roof this year.

The Polar Express

A favourite for families with smaller ones, this animated adventure is filled with action and self-discovery (and some great voice work from Tom Hanks).

Holidate

Starring Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey, this movie isn’t family friend but it does off a refreshing approach to rom-com formula.

Think of it as a more raunchy Hallmark Christmas special…

The Santa Clause

Ever wondered how Santa Clauses are…made? Tim Allen stars in this fantastically 90s comedy about a man who accidentally offs Santa (oops) and ends up wearing his boots. Literally.

Bridget Jones Diary

Christmas sweaters, awkward hometown Christmas parties and an adorable snow-kissed finale. What more could you ask for? Besides, there’s nothing better than Hugh and Colin failing at fisticuffs.

Best for watching with your girlfriends or mum.

Home Alone

A favourite of the 90s generation, Home Alone (and its sequels) are the perfect balance between sugary sweet Christmas feels and hilarious hijinks as little Kevin tries to defend his home from burglars while he’s, funnily enough, home alone.

The Holiday

Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law. Need we say more? It might be thoroughly predictable but it’s the perfect comfort movie on Christmas.

The Christmas Chronicles

For those in the mood for Santa Kurt Russell, The Christmas Chronicles well worth a yuletide stream. It’s fun and imaginative holiday movie that should fit nicely onto your Christmastime watchlist.

Love Hard

A charming cast can never go wrong on Christmas – and Love Hard is great for anyone in the mood for a sweet and charming holiday rom-com.

Make this your post lunch (and food coma) easy-to-watch flick.

Arthur Christmas

A hilarious, star-studded look at the technical side of Christmas including tech-decked Elves, children counting equipment to make sure no one is missed and a very snazzy Sleigh.

Very funny voicework from James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent and High Laurie gives you a very British Christmas, filled with laughs.

It’s A Wonderful Life

A classic for the Christmas film snobs out there. A little too dreary for some (you won’t find any tricky CGI here) but instead you’re left with some of the most quotable lines in classic cinema history and a gorgeous old timey soundtrack.
