Celebrated every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day is a day for conversation and action—reflecting on women’s achievements and taking leaps towards equality.
Here’s where you can #choosetochallenge (the theme for IWD 2021) in Canberra over the next few weeks.
Women Who Rock for Charity
12 hours, three shows, 11 bands, three charities, one day—Saturday 13 March
On Saturday 13 March 2021 save the day—the whole day—to spend with 11 local acts performing Live @ The Polo, across three shows from midday until midnight.
The first show WOMEN WHO ROCK for DVCS commences at midday and features Lucy Ridge @ the Derby Widows, NTT Canberra and the infamous Monica Moore Trio rocking out for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS), with Glenda Stevens from DVCS as MC.
The second show, WOMEN WHO ROCK for BERYL WOMEN INC, commences at 4 pm and features Ana Key & the Underdogs, Sally Chicane, Chins (.band) and Box Dye, with MC’s Rachel and Angie from Beryl Women Inc.
The third show, WOMEN WHO ROCK for KARINYA HOUSE starts at 8.30 pm and the MC is 2CC Announcer, Jen Seyderhelm, featuring The Black Souls, Slagatha Christie and Matriarch—it is going to be a hard call to choose which show to attend!

The Canberra Labor Club IWD Dinner
In celebration of IWD, The Canberra Labor Club invites you to a 3-course dinner and drinks, hosted by the Group Editor for Region Media, Genevieve Jacobs.
She is the chairman and on the board of many ACT organisations for arts and agriculture, including the arts minister’s Creative Advisory Council. Inspirational guest speakers will include Tara Cheyne, Ginger Gorman, Sarah Watson, Hannah Andrevski and Nipuni Wijewickrema.

Girls Can’t Surf
Enjoy a preview screening of epic documentary Girls Can’t Surf at Dendy Canberra this International Women’s Day.
This groundbreaking, feel-good doco is all about surfing’s 1980s heyday, when men ruled the waves and women were shunned from the surfing community—until a band of renegade female surfers hit the waves.

Canberra Women in Business 31 Day Celebration of women
The Canberra Women in Business (CWB) aims to recognise and celebrate women in the Canberra community throughout the month of March, highlighting a different woman every day.
CWB’s first International Women’s Day event is an online panel of Lifeline Canberra CEO, Carrie Leeson, and CWB President Sheena Ireland, discussing mental health support for women in business.
They will end the IWD 2021 campaign with drinks on 31 March 5.30 pm, location TBA.

IWD 2021 with the Australian Institute of International Affairs and the International Committee of the Red Cros
In partnership with the Canberra Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the AIIA is hosting a panel of speakers on Tuesday, March 9 at 6 pm who will be discussing “Gender and Humanitarian Action.”
In this conversation with three women with extensive experience in the humanitarian sector, we seek to hold up a gender lens to the complexities of humanitarian action.

YWCA presents Our Lives, Our Futures: Gender Equality in the Age of COVID-19
YWCA will continue to build on their tradition this IWD of focusing on the lives and stories of Canberra women with the screening of a short documentary. It will explore how the pandemic has impacted on gender equality and women’s economic security and wellbeing, through sharing the experiences of local women. The screening will be followed by an expert panel discussion with local female policy and advocacy leaders.

ANU College of Law Panel: #WomenLead in Law
ANU has comprised a panel of all-female alumni extraordinaires including, Elizabeth Carroll, Melanie Poole and Heather Roberts, to discuss forging a career in law and how get to the top in a male-dominated industry.
Of course, a little networking will follow with a light lunch provided. This will also be broadcasted live on Zoom.

The Joyful Business Club Breakfast: Women in Leadership with Jennifer Wittwer CSM, FAHRI
Serina Bird, author, money coach, podcaster and former diplomat will moderate a chat with Jennifer Wittwer CSM, FAHRI, who served as a navy officer for 40 years, including a gender advisor to NATO operations in Afghanistan, and seconded to UN Women in New York as a policy specialist on peacekeeping, sexual exploitation and abuse.
