Bittersweet symphony: a Cruel Intentions musical is coming to Canberra

Dig out your flip phone and put MTV on because everyone’s fave dark comedy from the ’90s is back—with a musical twist.
That’s right—get ready to live your 90s New York City fantasies when Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical comes to Canberra Theatre Centre from 5–8 October 2022.
For those who don’t remember any foot-tapping numbers in the 1999 hit film, you’re not wrong—Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t blasting out ballads in her role as the manipulative Kathryn and Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe didn’t do a duet in that pool. But that’s exactly the fun of this musical.
Similar to American Psycho: The Musical, which was due to tour Canberra in 2020 before lockdown struck, Cruel Intentions blends the film’s pulse-raising plot with nostalgic musical numbers that will transport you right back to the 90s.
“Since announcing the Australian professional premiere of Cruel Intentions, we’ve been overwhelmed with positive responses and audiences wanting to know what this new production will involve,” says David Venn, the show’s producer.
“We’re excited to share this intrigue with audiences in Perth and Canberra, who have already shown so much enthusiasm for the show…whether they’re die-hard fans of the movie or can’t wait to relive the ‘90s through a smash hit soundtrack. We know there will be lots to love about this high energy show.”
The show’s musical numbers will come courtesy of a killer throwback soundtrack—think: Every You and Every Me (Placebo), Bye Bye Bye (*NSYNC), Sometimes (Britney Spears), Just A Girl (No Doubt), Foolish Games (Jewel), Genie In A Bottle (Christina Aguilera), Candy (Mandy Moore), Breakfast At Tiffany’s (Deep Blue Something), Kiss Me (Sixpence None the Richer), Iris (The Goo Goo Dolls), I’ll Make Love To You (Boyz II Men), and, of course, Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve, which rounds out the film’s final iconic scene.
