Five creative Canberra events made for meeting people IRL

Posted on

In an increasingly online world, these five Canberra events offer a chance to reconnect with real people, offline.

With more people than ever trading screens for real-life connection, the rise of ‘analogue hobbies’ – think painting, reading and crafting – has been hard to miss. In fact (and somewhat ironically), Google Trends shows searches for the term have jumped by 160 per cent in the past 30 days alone.

But it’s not just about unplugging. Many people are also looking for new ways to make genuine connections – and we’re not talking about awkward networking nights. Luckily, Canberra has no shortage of low-pressure ways to meet like-minded people.

From creative workshops to gentle social strolls, these five events might just help you stop doom-scrolling – and you might even make a few new friends along the way.

Seasons of Self

Built around the idea that people need to do real things, in real time, Seasons of Self offers a range of workshops designed to foster connection. Led by an art therapist, counsellor and nature connection facilitator, sessions include basketry, social weaving and other hands-on experiences suitable for all skill levels.

With a focus on combating isolation, stress, boredom and burnout, these thoughtfully curated workshops offer a gentle way to connect with others while learning something new.

Scrap Society

Founded in 2024 by local creative Brooke Corkhill, Scrap Society began with a simple idea: a space for creativity, craft and connection. Hosting monthly events where participants can scrapbook, junk journal or collage, the sessions are designed for anyone keen to get offline and make something with their hands.

Tickets often sell out ahead of time, so keep an eye on the @scrapsociety_ Instagram page to see when the next session is announced.

Make Art – Eat Cake

Hosted by award-winning artist and qualified visual art teacher Marianne Mettes, Make Art – Eat Cake is a relaxed, two-hour visual art workshop for beginners and seasoned creatives alike. Participants are guided through hands-on techniques while enjoying coffee, cake and conversation.

It’s as much about connection as it is creativity, making it an ideal low-stakes way to meet like-minded people. Be sure to join the waitlist to be notified about workshops in 2026.

Girls Club CBR

Created for women looking to connect, move and make friends – without the pressure of awkward small talk – Girls Club CBR is all about building friendships, one stroll at a time.

Designed to be as introvert-friendly as possible, the group hosts free monthly walks in locations across Canberra, with no obligation to stay for the full session. They also partner with local sporting clubs to offer free ‘taster’ activities, making it easy to try something new while meeting friendly faces along the way.

Slow Sketch Sunday

Perfect for all experience levels, on the first Sunday of the month, Wakefield’s holds a two-hour life drawing session. Starting with a small number of short warm-up poses before easing into longer, more considered poses, they promise a low-pressure atmosphere with breaks for drinks, food, conversation, and sharing work.

Drawing materials are supplied, or you can bring your own – just show up ready to create.
