Five tips from an auction expert

Posted on

Always wanted to try your hand at bidding at a live auction?

If you’re a fan of The Block, you’ll know that auctions can be fast-paced, exciting and almost anything can happen. But Zane Jordan, of the Auction Barn in Fyshwick, says auctions are also a great day out for everyday buyers looking for anything from furniture to art to fashion.

The Auctions Barn’s monthly Antique, Vintage and Collectibles auction is a really fun event to attend, and you could walk away with a unique piece that you can’t find anywhere else.

Before you raise your paddle, take a look at Zane’s top tips for auction first-timers to help you snag a bargain.

Come prepared

Do your research on what will be up for auction on the day. Once you’ve made a decision, trust your gut and buy what you love. But don’t get too carried away, you should always set your maximum bid and stick to it!

Ask the experts

Detailed information and images of the items for sale are available in advance, and the Auction Barn provides an opportunity for items to be inspected in the lead up. It is a sensible strategy particularly with antiques and collectibles, to take the time to inspect or get an expert appraisal. There is nothing worse than finding a chip or scratch when you collect your precious purchase at the end of the auction.

Watch out for warning signs

Buyers should be aware of certain words that may be used in the description of items. For example, if something is described as ‘style’ or ‘inspired’, you may be not buying original, but could probably be a reproduction.

Be a smart bidder

Trade buyers are known to wait until the last minute to bid, while newbies are more likely to jump in first and get the auction going. Waiting to see what others do first is usually a good strategy, as it allows you to size up the competition and formulate a plan of attack. If you consider yourself reserved or hesitant stand at the back of the crowd, but if you are loud and confident you’ll be best off down the front.

Go for the knock-out

If you’re ready to level-up your auction game, knock-out bidding is a powerful (but risky) tactic. This route is useful if you love something and are willing to go all out, as you can try to jump the bid by calling out large increases and meeting challenging bids with a quick response.

READY TO GIVE IT A GO?

The Auction Barn holds live auctions every week, and the next one is kicking off on 25 November. It’ll feature artworks by renowned Aboriginal artists including Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Emily Kame Kngwarreye, plus Moorcroft pottery, mid-century furniture, jewellery, and antique clocks. Oh, and a huge bronze Chinese temple bell.
