While Peking Duk and Safia look likely to take out spots in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100, local Canberra band Drawing North will take to the stage at this year’s Australia Celebrates Live Concert. Playing alongside Paul Kelly, Jessica Mauboy and Sheppard, Drawing North rounds out the 2015 line up for the free concert on the lawns of Parliament House on Sunday 25 January.

CEO of the National Australia Day Council, Jeremy Lasek, said, “Drawing North are definitely a band to watch and have a big future ahead of them. A group of young Aussies making great music, Drawing North are certain to win more fans at Australia Celebrates Live with their own brand of pop rock music.”

If their performance at this morning’s launch of Australia Day Your Way is anything to go by, they will be a great addition to the Australia Celebrates Live event, which combines the concert and the Australian of the Year Awards into one celebration, on one stage. It’s a family friendly event with entertainment kicking off at 4pm.

It’s set to be a great afternoon of entertainment, with a diverse musical line up. Paul Kelly, one of our  most gifted and best-loved singer-songwriters has been telling the story of our nation through song for over 30 years, so it’s only fitting that he will headline the 2015 Australia Celebrates Live concert.

He’ll be supported by a young woman who has performed for Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama and Ellen DeGeneres – and now Canberra audiences. With 14 Top 30 hit singles and multiple awards, including the ARIA Award for Best Female Artist in 2013, Jessica is already one of the most successful Australian female artists of all time.

Sheppard promises to bring an infectiously happy vibe to the event, which is sure to mark the start of another successful year. Named Best Group at the 2014 ARIAs, their other milestones include having the longest running number one single by an independent Australian artist of time for Geronimo, five Platinum Single Sales and the number one most played song on Australian radio.

Share your Australia Day

If you can’t make the concert, you can still be part of the experience, through social media. Australia Day Your Way sees the National Australia Day Council, the National Museum of Australia and Twitter Australia joining together to showcase the many ways Australians celebrate Australia Day , encouraging Australians around the globe to share their Australia Day traditions by posting an image using #AustraliaDay.

The aim is to create a digital snapshot of the many ways Australians celebrate Australia Day through a live curated digital exhibition on 26 January 2015 that will highlight the great diversity of our nation in celebration.

Jeremy Lasek said social media was an ideal way for all Australians to share what Australia Day means to them and for us to understand the many different viewpoints of the day.

“Australia Day means something different to everyone and it’s important that all Australians participate in a way that is right for them,” he said.

“We encourage all Australians to share their Australia Day traditions by publishing an image to #AustraliaDay so that we are able to showcase the rich diversity of our nation and what makes us proud to be Australian through this exhibition.”

Singer Ricki-Lee Coulter, who helped launch the initiative today, said Australia Day is a great time to reflect on how lucky we are to live in such a great country.

“Australia Day is a great time to be mindful and grateful of what we have in this country – it’s about taking a moment to stop and think how lucky we are,” said Ricki-Lee.

“Australia is a place where so many people come and fall in love with not just the country but also the people. My family are a great example – my Dad is from Scotland, came here to play rugby and met my Mum, then I was born in New Zealand but we’re all proud Australians!

“When I think about all the people I’ll spend Australia Day with going for a swim at the beach and having a barbecue and doing a gig at Bankstown – there’s my friends, family, the band and my dancers and the people we perform for – there’s such an extraordinary diverse range of backgrounds and cultures among those people and that’s what Australia is – multicultural, accepting and embracing and we’re all Australian.

This Australia day Your Way initiative was first delivered in 2014, when over 78,000 Tweets and 30,000 images were received by #AustraliaDay, including posts from Hugh Jackman, Kylie Minogue and Megan Gale. These Tweets and images have been collated into the Australia Day Twitter Time Capsule, which will be provided as a permanent digital showcase of our national day to the National Museum of Australia.

National Museum of Australia Director Dr Mathew Trinca, said the time capsule will be kept in perpetuity to provide an enduring snapshot of how the nation commemorated Australia Day 2014.

“The National Museum was delighted by last year’s response to its call for Australians to Tweet images on Australia Day and we encourage everyone to make 2015 even bigger and better by sending images of their Australia Day tradition for our curators to share with the country – however they choose to mark the day,” said Dr Trinca.

Twitter Australia’s Director of Public Policy, Julie Inman-Grant, said “Twitter is the perfect platform for sharing your traditions and celebrations around one of our most celebrated holidays of the year, Australia Day. Today, we’re pleased to handover the time capsule on behalf of Twitter to the National Museum of Australia as a permanent record of how Aussies celebrated one of the most special days on the Australian calendar.

“And for 2015, we are proud to again be a partner of the National Australia Day Council, to help them to make Australia Day an even bigger and better event this year and add another digital chapter to how Aussies celebrate the day their way.”

To be part of Australia Day Your Way, simply Tweet a photo which shows how you mark Australia Day and use the hashtag #AustraliaDay. If you’re attending the following Australia Day events, you can also use the special Twitter Mirrors on site to take a photo and Tweet your message.
