The Famous Spiegeltent comes to Civic

Posted on

Civic Square is set to transform into a performance playground with the launch of The Famous Spiegeltent in February.

Pre-sale tickets are available from next week from the Canberra Theatre Centre for a collection of Australian and International artists to perform at the large travelling tent, including internationally acclaimed headlining act, acrobatic cabaret show LA CLIQUE.

Originally built in 1920 by master craftsmen Oscar Mols Dom and Louis Goor, The Famous Spiegeltent has travelled to festivals and village fairs throughout Europe and beyond.

Packed into two 12-metre shipping containers, its features include ballooning velvet canopies, circular teak dance floor and stained, cut-glass windows, and takes about 12 hours to assemble its 3,000 pieces.

Owner of The Famous Spiegeltent David Bates says only a handful of spiegeltents remain in existence today.

“The most remarkable thing about The Famous Spiegeltent, is it’s transportable,” David says.

“So in the case of Canberra we present artists on this stage that will perform on the exact same stage in the UK straight afterwards, which is incredibly exciting.

“A lot of artists have their most special moments in The Famous Spiegeltent and have done for the last 20 years. And probably for 86 years before that. We’re thrilled to be setting up in Civic Square and to be working with Canberra Theatre Centre to bring such a vibrant experience to Canberra. The Famous Spiegeltent is an experience audiences never forget.”

Organisers say a “party atmosphere” will surround The Spiegeltent, including an outside bar and food perfect for the warm weather.
