FIRE & RAIN – THE JAMES TAYLOR SONGBOOK

1970, it’s the dawn of a new era, the sixties have gone and left in their wake is a darker, disillusioned world, a world which is searching for answers. The Beatles announce that they have disbanded, Jimi Hendrix & Janis Joplin both die of drug related excess, but amidst these ashes, every time you turn on the radio, you can’t escape the soothing, intensely personal reflections of a song called ‘Fire & Rain’. For all those who heard it for the first time, they knew that something had changed, the era of the singer-songwriter had arrived and James Taylor was crowned it’s king.

Darren Coggan, award winning performer and star of the critically acclaimed show ‘Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story’, takes us on an eloquent journey through the songbook of one of the most magnetic figures in the music world, articulating moments of pain and joy, tragedy and triumph, fire & rain.

Happening Saturday 7 April from 8pm-10pm at The Street Theatre, 15 Childers Street, City.

See the website for more information.

LLEWELLYN CHOIR PRESENTS REQUIEM MASS IN C MINOR BY LUIGI CHERUBINI

The Llewellyn Choir presents French composer Luigi Cherubini’s Requiem Mass in C minor. Written in 1816, it was one of the most highly regarded sacred works of its time. Beethoven remarked that if he were to compose a requiem, Cherubini’s would be the model, and it was in fact performed at Beethoven’s funeral. Cherubini was awarded France’s highest and most prestigious honour, Commandeur de la Legion d’Honneur, the first musician to receive that title.

The program also features another French composer, Louis Vierne’s Messe Solonelle, written in 1899. Vierne was a pupil of Cesar Franck, excelled at the organ and became the principal organist at Notre Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death in 1937. CANBERRA YOUTH THEATRE’S ‘FILTERED!’

A skillful cast of 7-12 year olds, co-directors and a guest artist, physical theatre maker Pablo Latona, have devised a piece that attempts to answer all the questions we’ve ever wondered about.

Why can’t boys wear dresses? Can you come back from the dead? Why were we given hearts? What happens when we die? Why do I exist?

Artists have examined these ideas to create a work that contrasts the questions and answers with physicality: through balancing, juggling and physical support.

Performances are Sunday 8 April, 2.45pm and 3.30pm, at the Ralph Wilson Theatre, Gorman Arts Centre, Braddon.

See the website for more information.

CLASSICAL CAPERS

Every now and then, good quality piano players sit down at the outdoor piano at Smith’s and bless us with some sweet, sweet music. Of course sometimes it’s drunken chopsticks, which we’re not sick of in the least, no not at all. But many times it’s good and we’ve taken to asking them if they’d like to come back sometime and play for an audience.

Thus was born Classical Capers. Every so often on a Wednesday at 7pm, we put out an open invitation to classical musicians of all levels of ability to come and play their instrument of choice, to sing, form small ensembles, do whatever they please. Come on. A special guest will often play a half hour set at the end. Have a go mate.

This event will be curated by Marlene Radice. If you’d like to participate, please email her at marlene.radice@gmail.com

Featuring:
Simon (voice and piano)

THE FUTURE OF ALL THINGS

‘The Future of All Things’ Presentation is being hosted by the Australian Computer Society.

We are living in an unprecedented age and unprecedented potential.

In the 2000s, the internet and social media changed the way we work and live. Now multiple disruptive and transformative technologies are on the horizon. From virtual, augmented and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) to blockchain to automation, we are in a time of accelerated change. And with that change comes the great potential for a bright future.

The challenge for both professionals and organisations becomes how to pick out which trends and technologies will matter and what their implications will likely be.

This session will provide attendees with just that. Using her superpowers of identifying and explaining key trends and technologies in an engaging and accessible way, Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie will draw on exciting real-world case studies from Australia and beyond to provide a glimpse into what the future might hold for how we live, work, learn and play.

CANBERRA FITNESS CENTRE DISORDER AWARENESS

Lock in 7th April. On this day we will be running 2 charity sessions, 7.30am Bootcamp and 8.30am Chase Athletic to raise money that will go towards Trekking Kokoda 96km in 9 days.

So what the hell is that? One of our old clients Jacqui Brooker is trekking Kokoda 14th April to raise awareness of, and funding for, eating disorders in the ACT. She like many others suffered of an eating disorder. I found this quite fascinating but did you know that over two million people in Australia suffer from an eating disorder?! Nearly 40,000 people in Canberra alone. Anorexia has the highest death rate of any mental illness in Australia. Those suffering from anorexia are 32 times more likely to commit suicide. This is such a shocking statistic, given our suicide rates are far too high as it is.

At present, Canberra does not have enough support available to care for people with eating disorders. Many health professionals feel that they lack the training, expertise and confidence to treat or support patients with eating disorders. This is the focus of the fundraising campaign that Jacqui commenced last year.

If you’re planning to attend please RSVP via the event and send us an email to getstarted@canberrafitnesscentre.com.au so that we can send you through pre exercise paperwork before attending.

If anyone who is not a member wants to sign up to one of our membership packages, if they sign up at the event we will donate 25% of your first months fees to the charity 🙂

If you can’t make the event you can donate via website.

Happening Saturday 7 April from 7.30 am at Canberra Fitness Centre. Find more information here.

Another Day in Paradise highlights the importance of forgiveness and compassion for humanity, while proving the profound power of art to change lives.

Tuggeranong Arts Centre CEO Rauny Worm emphasises, ‘the Centre is very much aware of the sensitivities of this exhibition and the ethical and moral complexity surrounding Sukumaran’s story.’ For this reason, TAC will present these works along with ‘The Human Condition,’ a suite of public programs that invite the community to explore the many difficult themes and questions emerging from the works and the associated story.

Happening until Sunday 29 April at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, 137 Reed Street North, Greenway.

INCOMMENSURABLE PHOTOMEDIA IN THE ERA OF GLOBALISATION AND JACQUELINE BRADLEY FIGURE IN THE LANDSCAPE

In even the most perfunctory effort to describe the characteristic phenomena of our age, we are struck time and again by how much the world is out of joint – by the incredible disparities in the circumstances and conditions of different parts of society and different parts of the world, in people’s lived experience and what they can possibly hope for.

Curated by Terence Maloon, the works in this exhibition by Nick Danziger, Merilyn Fairskye, Ciara O’Brien, David Stephenson, Martin Walch, Anne Zahalka set up conflicting perspectives that highlight some of the more troubling aspects of our globalised age.

Jacqueline Bradley’s works combine found materials – rocks, fencing wire, and dirt – with intimate bodily objects – combs, thimbles and scarves – in playful, delicately poised combinations. Sharing the gallery with Sidney Nolan’s Riverbend, these small sculptures reflect the artist’s interaction with the landscape and articulate some of the complexities encountered when negotiating our presence in the Australian environment.

An exhibition of Jacqueline Bradley exhibits nationally and internationally and is a PhD candidate and lecturer in the Sculpture Workshop at the ANU School of Art and Design.

Happening until Sunday 8 April at ANU Drill Gallery, Kingsley Street, Building 29, Acton. Free entry.

‘TRANSITIONS’

Artists: Helen Bodycomb, Pamela Irving, Rachel Bremner, Caitlin Hughes, Kate Butler

Featuring work by five leading mosaic artists, Transitions will explore the mosaic as a vehicle for complex artistic expression and conceptual investigation using traditional methods and experimental techniques.

In the last two decades there has been a resurgence of the ancient craft of mosaics both internationally and in Australia, with numerous Australian practitioners gaining international recognition. Despite the current surge in contemporary mosaics in Australia it is a little known phenomena. The exhibition seeks to address this imbalance.

Happening until Saturday 5 May at Craft ACT, 180 London Circuit, Level 1, North Building, City.

EXHIBITION ‘FUNCTIONAL SHADOWS: MARILOU CHAGNAUD’

2017 Artist-in-Residence Marilou Chagnaud will present a new body of work for her solo exhibition Functional Shadows.

Functional Shadows narrates a journey between two places, a research period at the Australian War Memorial followed by a residence at Gudgenby Ready-Cut Cottage in the Namadgi National Park. During two weeks, I explored the AWM collection of objects, studying materials, collecting shapes and stories. My research led me to pay attention to the history of camouflage in Australia during World War II, specifically the use of shadows to create visual confusion. The exhibition will present a body of works questioning our reading of forms and objects as well as
pushing the lines between function and abstraction.

Marilou Chagnaud is a French artist and designer established in Canberra. Approaching paper with an eye to its sculptural possibilities, she explores the deployment of printed patterns into spatial installations, objects and sculptures, investigating the path from two to three-dimensional space as well as the notions of repetition and perception.

Presented in partnership with ACT Parks and Conservation Service and the Australian War Memorial.

Happening until Saturday 5 May at Craft ACT, 180 London Circuit, Level 1, North Building, City.

1968: CHANGING TIMES

Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll…and a missing prime minister.

1968 was momentous. A time of tumultuous world events, including the Vietnam War and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.

At home in Australia, we struggled with the fallout from the December 1967 disappearance of Prime Minister Harold Holt and growing unrest about conscription for overseas military service.

From Hendrix’s blistering solos and far-out fashions to a swinging counter-culture, there was a strong sense that the world was rapidly changing. Where were we headed?

The opening of the National Library’s lakeside building in Canberra in August 1968 was a moment of national pride and achievement in the midst of this turbulent time.

Revisit the 1960s as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the building’s opening, and reflect on what was happening in the world, in Australia and in Canberra at the time.

Showing until Sunday 12 August at the National Library of Australia, Parkes Place West, Parkes.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Works are a mixture of stencil, aerosol and sublimation on aluminium on canvas. Sublimation printing is a process of heating dye and transferring onto a medium such as paper or plastic.

This exhibition is presented alongside Another Day in Paradise.

Happening until Sunday 29 April 2018 from 10am–5pm at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, 137 Reed Street North, Greenway. Free entry.

ART DECO

Comprised entirely of works selected from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection, Art Deco presents superb examples of Australian vitalism, capturing Art Deco’s fascination with the meeting of art, architecture, and technology.

In the 1920s, Australian artists rebelled against the austerity of World War I to create images of an abundant nation filled with strong, youthful figures, capturing the vitalism of a nation reborn.

Technological advancements and urbanisation influenced the emergence of Art Deco: a new aesthetic in art, architecture, design and fashion.

Art Deco presents superb examples of Australian Vitalism, including Rayner Hoff’s architectural frieze Deluge – stampede of the lower gods 1927, Jean Broome-Norton’s Abundance 1934 and Napier Waller’s painting, I’ll put a girdle round about the earth 1933, which captures Art Deco’s fascination with the meeting of art, architecture and technology.

Deeds Not Words: The Bessie Rischbieth Collection

National Library of Australia is proudly representing the opportunity to see the collection of Bessie Rischbieth, a prominent figure in Australian and international feminism.

During her stay in England in 1913, Bessie Rischbieth witnessed the whirlwind of the suffragettes’ struggle for the right to vote, which was then at its height.

Fascinated by the charisma of the suffragettes and their militant actions, she gathered memorabilia of the movement, building a collection of photographs, pamphlets, newspaper cuttings, suffrage periodicals, postcards and correspondence. She continued to grow the collection for the remainder of her life.

Rischbieth bequeathed this ‘living memorial’ to the National Library of Australia.

Free entry.

Showing until 19 August daily from 10 am to 5 pm at National Library of Australia, Parkes Place West.
