Fares Bueller: Eat like it’s your day off

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. One thing you won’t want to miss is Canberra’s newest food truck Fares Bueller.
Ever indulged in a little Sunday cheat day? Or Saturday? Or Friday? The weekend is the ultimate time to treat yourself and oh-lordy do we have just the place you’ll want to pay a visit to this weekend…and every weekend after that.
It’s called Fares Bueller and its setting up shop (or truck) at Waves Carwash on Lonsdale Street in Braddon from this Saturday.

Brought to life by friends Ismail Hammoud and Jad Hmaydan, the food truck focuses on Middle Eastern food with a fresh flair.
“Fares Bueller was created to provide a taste of the Lebanese flavours we grew up with, but in a fresh and modern way,” explains 21-year-old Ismail.
The idea came about when the longtime friends were reminiscing about their late-night food adventures in Beirut, realising the Canberra food scene had nothing comparable. It was time something hip and Lebanese hit the local food scene and duo knew they were just the guys to bring it to life.

“Our menu was inspired by our mums’ cooking and every one of our items incorporates uniquely Middle Eastern elements,” says 26-year-old Jad.
“But our idea was to put a twist on the classics, serving up food that can be enjoyed by all. The flavours are what we’ve grown up with, and we’d love to share the same experience with the people of Canberra.”
Menu items include Fried Tawook—a succulent fried chicken burger that combines Lebanese flavours, like pickled turnips with fried chicken, jack cheese and garlic aioli, and the Al Falafel—house made falafel, hummus, tomato, sumac onions and pickles on fresh Lebanese bread (P.S. it’s vegan).

But my personal favourite is the Knafeh French Toast—a cheeky twist on the traditional sweet cheese pastry, topped with pistachios and delightful rose water syrup.
“We really want to give people a leisurely experience that they want to come back for, just like every time you eat in in the streets of Beirut,” says Jad.
“We’re not just providing food, we’re providing customers with an experience.”
And an experience it will be, with the food truck’s grand opening tomorrow featuring traditional Lebanese drummers performing from 6 pm! Trust me, you’ll want to get amongst this hot, sweaty, acrobatic action.
As for the name?
“It’s a play on Ferris Bueller! We wanted a fun name that accurately reflected out theme which is merging traditional Lebanese elements with Western Cult classics,” says Ismail.
“We also encourage everyone who comes to see us to eat like it’s their day off.”
Fares Bueller’s grand opening party begins tomorrow Saturday 26 October from 12pm at Waves Carwash in Braddon.
