Singapore: five foodie destinations
Posted on
Singapore is one of the most unique cities in the world and boasts an incredible array of food experiences—from the energy of street food to rooftop cocktails accompanied by jawdropping views.
Have you heard the news? From Wednesday 21 to Tuesday 27 August HerCanberra CEO Amanda Whitley and your local travel expert from Flight Centre Manuka will be taking a group of 16 Canberrans on the ultimate Singapore foodie adventure. Grab your girl gang, bestie, mum, sister or partner and come along! But be quick—bookings close 30 June! You can discover all the details here.
Flying direct from Canberra Airport with Singapore Airlines you’ll arrive bright and early and ready to explore this amazing city. To whet your appetite here’s just a taste of what foodie secrets this vibrant city holds—some which you’ll discover as part of the trip, others you can explore on your own.
Chinatown

Ok, so Chinatown isn’t exactly a secret. But it’s what lies within its four main districts—each jam-packed with anything from temples, to street food, luxury hotels and of course, some delectable restaurants—that’s the real hidden treasure. Once you’ve explored the markets and temples, and the buzz of Smith Street, go off the beaten track in search of something a little special.
Can’t resist the allure of a Michelin-starred restaurant? Look no further than Meta (1 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089109)—continuing the theme of French cuisine with an Asian twist, it’s headed by Sun Kim, formerly of Tetsuya’s in Sydney.

While you’re in the neighbourhood, head to Duxton Hill. This leafy and lush suburb boasts a cornucopia of flavours. One of our faves is Lucha Loco (15 Duxton Hill, Singapore 089598), a casual and vibrant Mexican cocina and garden bar serving contemporary Mexican food. The cocktails go down too well on a balmy evening and their Mexican street-style grilled corn rubbed with mayo, chili, and cotija cheese is out of this world!

Little India
Don’t let the name fool you—in this bustling ethnic enclave, you’ll find everything from French food to tapas right next to traditional Indian restaurants and stores. Once you’ve chowed down, you can explore spice shops, jewellery stores, flower vendors, saree specialists and much more.

Looking to really taste this neighbourhood? Head to Tekka Centre (665 Buffalo Road, Singapore 210665), a wet market, food centre and shopping complex in one. Dishes to try include biryani, dosa, roti prata, Indian rojak and teh tarik (pulled tea). Or make your way to Muthu’s Curry (138 Race Course Road, Singapore 218591) for its signature fish head curry.

Don’t leave town without a visit to Mustafa Centre (145 Syed Alwi Road, Singapore 207704). This 24-hour shopping centre sprawls across entire blocks and will blow your mind, selling pretty much everything. Best pack a lunch to get through it all.

Dempsey Hill
Formerly known as the British army barracks constructed in the 1800s and the old CMPB national service enlistment centre, charming conservation buildings still stand proudly amongst lush greenery at Dempsey Hill (8D Dempsey Road #03-01, Singapore 249679).

From fine dining to casual chic, there’s an amazing array of eateries to choose from in this little oasis from Singapore’s hustle and bustle—a few faves are Chop Suey (10 Dempsey Rd, #01-23, Singapore 247700), Morsels (25 Dempsey Road, #01-04, Singapore 249670) and The Green Door (13A Dempsey Rd, Singapore 247694).

Once you’ve had your fill, explore antique furniture, fine teak works, handcrafted carpets and exotic art pieces sourced globally.
Kampong Glam
Perhaps the Singaporean equivalent of Braddon, Kampong Glam is an eclectic neighbourhood where rows of textile shops and hole-in-the-wall boutiques meet buzzy restaurants, hip bars and street art. Anchored by the incredible Sultan Mosque, the choice of dining destinations is every bit as colourful as the surroundings.

Nox – Dine in The Dark (269 Beach Rd, Singapore 199546) is perhaps the most unique dining experience in Singapore—a culinary journey through taste, smell, touch and sound, in total darkness. Seated in Nox’s pitch-black dining room, you will be guided and served by blind or visually impaired individuals who have been specially trained to offer guidance and reassurance to sighted guests.

Love live music with a side of great drinks? Make your way to Blu Jaz Café (11 Bali Ln, Historic Kampong Glam, Singapore 189848)—yes, it has hot jazz but you’ll also find hip-hop, reggaeton and more on the playlist. And for a truly authentic taste of Singapore, head to Singapore Zam Zam Restaurant (699 North Bridge Road) and order murtabak—a stuffed flatbread. Oily dough is transformed into paper-thin sheets before being filled with egg, cheese, mutton or chicken, and fried until golden on the griddle. Yum.

Tiong Bahru
Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore, and is full of gorgeous three-storey art deco buildings. It houses many cool little shops, cafés and restaurants and is just made for wandering to find that perfect Insta-moment. There’s also a great wet market and hawker’s centre right in the middle of it all.
