10+ places you can cure your hot cross bun cravings in Canberra

Posted on

Is it too early to be writing about hot cross buns? Maybe. Do we care? Not at all. It’s hot cross bun season, baby!

The Easter long weekend might feel like a distant dream (four days off? Bliss), but for those who want to get into the season early, there are plenty of local bakeries serving up hot cross buns in Canberra.

All baked fresh and best enjoyed slathered in butter, hop to it!

The Bakehouse Mitchell (Mitchell)

The Bakehouse Mitchell gets top billing on this list because here you can find not one, not two, but FIVE different flavours of hot cross buns. Just a warning: if you’re a traditionalist when it comes to this Easter treat, you might want to look away.

While they do have the classic flavour on offer, here you can also try the Hot Cross Finger Bun, the Matcha and White Chocolate Bun, the Red Velvet Bun (filled with cream cheese icing) and the Hot Cross French Toast, which looks as good as it sounds – complete with blueberry compote, fresh berries, yoghurt, maple syrup and peanut butter. Drooling yet?

Oh. My. Ube. Who would say no to purple yam and jackfruit hot cross buns? Pop in store or order them online before they disappear.

This micro bakery has been treating tastebuds to traditional, freshly made maritozzo for months, but now they’re adding hot cross buns to their offering for a limited time.

Opening pre-orders (which will be cut off on Wednesday 9 April at 4 pm), they’ll deliver freshly made buns to your doorstep on Sunday 13 April and Thursday 17 April, so you don’t even need to leave the house.

All made from scratch, they will also have some limited quantities available at their pop-up at the Handmade Markets on Friday 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 March  – it’s first in, best dressed so you better be quick!

Releasing gluten-free hot cross buns ahead of Easter, these buns are free from gum, additives, preservatives, seed oil and refined sugar.

Made with their own blend of gluten-free flours and spices with a little twist of the cross on top, it’s the perfect gluten-free Easter treat.
