A bite of Weston’s growing food scene
Posted on
Weston Creek is experiencing a foodie renaissance.
Home to Cooleman Court, and gorgeous natural scenery, over the years the area has grown into something of a foodie precinct – if you know where to look. And with the announcement of two new eateries in and near Cooleman Court, we thought we would take a look Weston’s growing food scene.
Home to everything from cafés to international cuisine, go west. Go hungry.
Here are some dining destinations worth a visit.
BREAKFAST
From an artisan bakery to classic Australian cafés, the breakfast and brunch scene in Weston is almost its own precinct. An example? Loved by the community for 15 years, Lava Coffee has long been a favourite of caffiends in the area. Opening in 2009 before expanding to Phillip and Kingston, the cult following of this café is unmatched –just like the coffee.
But on the days that it’s too busy to get a table, Chris’s Patisserie & Bakehouse is located right next door on Brierly Street. This family-run business is known for its delicious and wholesome food – from the café classics to decadent sweet treats, and hot baked goods.
Little Billy’s is also a popular spot for early risers and brunch-goers. Taking both food and coffee very seriously, here you’ll find monster-sized food items, including all of your café breakfast favourites. Open from 6 am, don’t be surprised if you see tradies and first responders hanging out here – with a $14 breakfast special and the option to take away all of their delicious meals, it’s as easy as grabbing and going.
But for those who can’t go past a viral food moment, Wildflour inside Cooleman Court is the place to go. Pulling large crowds (especially on the weekends), not only can you grab yourself a cappuccino from ONA coffee or a creamy matcha latte, but you can also get your hands on an range of artisanal breads and sourdoughs, hot pies, quiches and sausage rolls and a seasonal and ever-changing array of cakes and sweet baked goods. Just be prepared, because you might have to line up to get your hands on some goodies.
LUNCH
Sakeena’s Café might be little, but it’s never quiet – and for good reason. Open from 7 am until 5.30 pm, while they do serve breakfast items here, it’s their hot food and cake cabinets that are worth checking out. Ranging from homemade pasties to pasta, roast veggies and pies as well as endless cakes, slices and biscuits, you won’t leave this café hungry.
Looking for something fast but fresh? Freddy Frapples is something of a forgotten gem. Located next door to a supermarket, it’s easy to walk past this salad bar. But our advice is: don’t. Making salads and pasta daily, in the summer you can also grab yourself freshly squeezed juice and in winter, dig into some delicious soup. Open seven days a week, it’s convenient and healthy any time of the day.
And for those seeking a pub feed without having to travel into Woden or Civic, the Meating Room is the place to go. Ideal for meat lovers (it’s in the name after all), from pizzas to pub classics, they have it all. Ideal for a relaxing lunch, order yourself a cold drink to wash it all down.
DINNER
With the announcement of PRONTO opening very soon, classic Italian food will soon be on the menu at Cooleman Court. Also open in Queanbeyan, with their 300-year-old Neapolitan pizza recipe, regional Italian pasta, and specialty delicatessen products, you’ll find all you know and love with a few extra surprises in their Weston location.
Hidden around the back of Cooleman Court, Baitong serves a delicious mix of Laos and Thai cuisine, ranging from comforting Phad Xe Uw to fresh Som Tam Thai. Perfect for satisfying any craving, the relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for a relaxed night out.
Recently opening next to Little Billy’s, a Taste of Asia on Briefly Street is also tickling tastebuds with Asian cuisine. Serving traditional Vietnamese dishes, you’ll find Pho and Bahn Mi on the menu here – but that’s just the beginning. It’s the perfect spot for a quick bite or a leisurely meal.
Classic Indian Restaurant is also another local favourite for foodies. Bringing the best of Indian food and flavours to the area, they have all of the classic dishes you love, along with some inspired by the many varied regional cuisines of the country.
And what’s dinner without dessert? Luckily That Gelato Place has you covered. This family-owned business serves Pure Gelato, one of Australia’s most awarded gelato brands. With endless flavours to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to a creamy, cold snack.
COMING SOON
And that’s just the beginning. Taking over the spot formerly home to My’s Vietnamese, a new café and bar will be opening its doors. All we know is the name: Andre’s Osteria. Keep your eyes on this space, because once we know more, we’ll drop the goss.
