A taste of Singapore has arrived in the city and we are hungry

My word, there is something almost cruel about an announcement this tasty landing in your inbox right before lunch.

That’s how I felt when I read the news (and saw the photos! The photos!) of new Singaporean eatery Lim Peh Wan Tan Mee that’s snapped up a spot at Verity Lane Market in the city and will open tomorrow night.

Billed as serving “unapologetically authentic and affordable Singaporean noodle dishes”, the name is a cute nod to the owners’ Singaporean roots.

“Lim Peh” is a colloquial term used amongst Singaporeans when addressing oneself as somebody’s father in a casual fashion, explains the new owners.

“We hope this name will provide an amusing cultural reference to our friends.”

Inspired by the hawker stalls of Singapore and their signature Wan Tan Mee (dry egg noodles topped with wontons, choy sum and char siu pork, accompanied by a hearty broth) Lim Peh Wan Tan Mee will be dishing up an authentic taste of Singapore and honestly, we can’t think of eating anything better as Canberra descends into autumn.

“We are presenting our version of Wantan Mee to Canberra, along with other traditional noodle bowls which we hope will provide nostalgia to both travelled locals and those who call Singapore home,” explain the owners.

Joining this warming dish on the menu will be an array of delicious hawker-style meals, including Hainanese Beef Noodles, Teochew Braised Duck Noodles and Lor Mee as well as smaller snack-style options like rice noodle rolls, curry pok (or puffs) and wan tan. Yum.

“The goal for this shop is to provide an authentic food experience that is easily accessible in Canberra’s bustling CBD.”

“We are excited to transport our customers to the vibrant hawker centres of Singapore, where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy a variety of delicious street foods in a lively, communal atmosphere.”

Better yet, the menu will be easy on Canberrans’ pockets, with a focus on accessibility.

“Our focus on affordability is what we hope sets us apart. Everyone should have access to a great meal at a reasonable price and we want to be the go-to spot for office workers, bus drivers, university students, and even date night diners looking for a delicious, high-quality meal that is also affordable.”

Lim Peh Wan Tan Mee will open at Verity Lane Market for dinner from tomorrow, Tuesday 17 April.
