A Tuscan Lunch sounds like a Smart idea

Posted on

Artist Jeffrey Smart loved the good life enjoyed in Italy, his second home. In the final weeks of the National Gallery of Australia’s Jeffrey Smart exhibition, why don’t you enjoy a—or perhaps treat your Mum—to a taste of la dolce vita with a Tuscan-style lunch inspired by his passions?

Smart possessed an undeniable exuberance for good food, good wine, and was a renowned host. It’s no surprise that he leaned towards Italian traditions when it came to dining and hospitality.

“I like everything Italian. I like the offhand way of them. I like the language, and I love spaghetti, and I love the Italian painting, and I like the Italian way of life,” he was quoted as saying in 2005 while living in Tuscany.

As part of its homage to Smart, the National Gallery has created a culinary experience to accompany the exhibition, which celebrates 100 years since the birth of Smart.

The “Tuscan Lunch” is hosted in the Gallery’s dining room overlooking the Sculpture Garden. Inspired by the great Italian trattorias, the seasonal menu showcases locally sourced and fresh produce with Primi, Secondi and Dolce courses.

Guests are invited to choose two courses from menu which includes everything from Sardine crudo with capers, salsa verde, and sourdough wafer, to slow cooked lamb shoulder ragu pappardelle with olives, parsley, and gremolata, to panna cotta with Campari, blood orange and blueberries.

An extensive wine list accompanies the lunch menu and a glass is included in the price of $55 for adults and $49.50 for members. Children are welcome and have their own dedicated menu priced at $25 and $22.50 for members (and they get a soft drink or juice!)

Places are limited for this event which concludes on Sunday 15 May.
