The world’s best pizza chefs have been named – and one of them can be found right here in Canberra

Pizza Artigiana has made a name for itself as being one of the best places to get a slice of woodfire pizza in Canberra, matching what you would find in Italy.
So, it should come as no surprise that one of its chefs has been named one of the top 100 pizza chefs in the world.
Coming in 100th place (and as one of two Australians named) Thapa Magar Hemnath from Pizza Artigiana has been recognised by The Best Chef Awards for his tasty creations – which range from classic slices like the Margherita to mouthwatering combinations including the Quattro Stagioni-Pietro (a tomato base, mozzarella, grilled eggplant, artichoke, mushroom, and kalamata olives).

Started in 2015 by Polish neuroscientist Joanna Slusarczyk and Italian gastronomist Cristian Gadau, the mission of The Best Chef is to be a place for food lovers to exchange knowledge and experiences, discuss current topics, and debate on universal topics from the world of fine dining.
Creating The Best Pizza Award (among others which include the Top100 Chefs), the project also hopes to celebrate people whose experience, passion, and determination led them to achieve success, inspiring the next generation of chefs.
Recognising the best pizza chefs/pizzaiolos in the world by identifying them and their establishments, the result of The Best Pizza is based on the opinions and votes of a group of 200 people (including pizzaiolos and other gastronomy professionals from six continents, 24 countries, and 74 cities around the globe).
Looking for creativity, intelligence, passion, innovation, and sustainability, The Best Pizza Awards (unsurprisingly) saw Italian pizzaiolos topping both the ranking and the list of special awards. And while Thapa won’t be travelling to Mexico to receive accolades on the stage during The Best Chef Awards Ceremony, he’s now considered one of the best pizza chefs in the world – and we’re proud to call him our own.
