Five Canberra breakfasts we love
Posted on
Whether you’re feeling sweet, savoury or a little bit of both, Canberra’s breakfast options are too good to pass up.
The capital has experienced such an explosion of sophisticated cafes over the past couple of years that it can be hard to keep up! So we’ve put together a list of our current favourite spots to munch and brunch at.
Highroad: French Toast

Highroad, opened by ONA coffee in 2017, offers some of the best breakfast on the north side of town. Canberrans love this restaurant for the specialty coffee, funky atmosphere, and menu that features the best local ingredients. A star dish is their French Toast: house banana bread, mascarpone, maple and a host of fruits top it off. The definition of sweet-tooth heaven.

Kith and Nosh: Kickstart Bowl

This Lonsdale Street café offer up soulful food, cooked with mindfulness and love. Be greeted by cheerful staff and enjoy watching your food be prepared in the open kitchen. We’re fans of the healthy Kickstart Bowl: cauliflower and broccoli rice, with kale and almonds, topped with pickled cabbage, chilli jam, pickled ginger, buckwheat granola and two poached eggs. Fussy eaters can celebrate, as this dish can be modified to be vegan, but is otherwise entirely paleo, gluten free, dairy free and nut free!

Local Press Cafe: LP Breakfast

A rustic and light-filled café nestled on the Kingston Foreshore that celebrates whole, unrefined foods. Fans of the big breakfast will love Local Press’ take on this classic. The LP breakfast features Three Mills Bakery sourdough, eggs your way, mushroom medley smoked ham, tomatoes, smashed avocado and special chutney.
35 Eastlake Parade, Kingston
Mocan and Green Grout: Salmon Gravlax
This eco-friendly café is hidden away in a corner of the NewActon precinct. Sourcing locally grown produce, and growing all of their own herbs, the food is prepared with integrity, and the atmosphere is intimate and homely. Our favourite dish is the Salmon Gravlax served with cucumber, apple, lemon crème fraiche and capers.
1/19 Marcus Clarke Street, NewActon
Little Oink: Pan-fried Hash

Little Oink is a colourful and dynamic café, situated at the Cook Shops. Their large menu will delight every type of foodie, and their weekly specials are consistently delicious. During wintertime, we like to warm up with with their pan-fried hash. A pan fried hash brown with semi dried tomato, fetta, baby spinach, shallots and two eggs… what’s not to love?
