Five bars with a killer wine list
Posted on
Because sometimes there’s nothing like a glass of wine.
Canberra is home to some amazing wine bars (in fact, here are 14 of them) but for those seeking something a little bit different, a few stand out for their serious approach to serving a top drop.
Here are five bars with a killer – and unique – wine list.
11e Cave (Kingston)
This tiny underground wine bar packs a punch. Inspired by the small French cellar bars serving simple snacks and ‘kickarse’ wines (their words, not ours), here you’ll find a mouth-watering selection of natural wines and moreish food from award-winning Onzieme upstairs.
Preferring drops that have minimal intervention, hand-picked grapes, and native yeast fermentation, it’s no wonder that it was announced as a finalist in the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards Wine Bar of the Year category.
That alone makes it worth a visit.

Wine Room (City)
This intimate 40-seater venue is tucked away, but unmissable once you know where to look. And it’s all in the name.
Serving an eclectic wine offering, based on the concept that wine should be a fun and fluid affair (with wines by the glass slated to change weekly), it even has a takeaway license in case you need another bottle to go.

Rizla (Braddon)
When it comes to wine bars, Rizla should be at the top of your list. The focus at Rizla (as hinted by its name) is on Riesling and matching share plates designed specifically to pair with the wine list.
Alongside the Canberra District’s best new vintage and cellared Rieslings, you can find an inventive menu that will take you all the way from light bites to decadent desserts.

Romanée (Braddon)
Tucked away in a Braddon laneway, Romanée wine bar is owned by Canberra hospitality stalwart Chester Mok – certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers and former Chef.
If you’re after interesting wines poured by a knowledgeable and passionate team, this is the place to go. Small plates of food are also on offer.

Paranormal Wines (Campbell)
A slightly industrial, quite glamorous, and extremely spacious wine bar and shop, Paranormal Wines boasts a huge range of organic and natural wines.
The brainchild of Kiwi-born hospitality guru Max Walker and his Canberra-born arts administrator partner Georgia Hobbs, the name Paranormal is a reference to experimenting beyond the safe grounds of wine and being open to new tastes and methods.
Pop in for a glass of wine and charcuterie platter after work, or to grab a bottle to go with dinner at home.
