Five gluten-free desserts to cross off your bucket list

Posted on

There’s something all gluten-free foodies know: the one thing harder than finding a good restaurant is finding a good gluten-free dessert.

But forget settling for a basic scoop of vanilla ice cream, Canberra has stepped up its dietary-friendly sweet treats in recent years and apart from a little GF marked on the menu, you’d barely know the difference.

Here we’ve rounded up five gluten-free desserts you need to have on your foodie bucket list—and trust us when we say you’ll need to make sure to wear your stretchy pants, because you’ll definitely be going back for seconds.

Salted coconut banana gelato with crumb and caramel (Dada)

A newbie on the foodie scene, Dada’s menu is heaven: packed full of delicious and gluten-free options (as well as dairy-free, egg-free and vegan). But it’s their desserts that really stand out: think options like mandarin sorbet with house-made valrhona choco crisps. Our pick? The salted coconut banana gelato with crumb and caramel. Designed specifically to be gluten-free, your stomach will thank you.

G4, 12 Furzer Street, Phillip – next to Space Kitchen | Open Wednesday to Saturday for lunch 12 pm– 2 pm, and Tuesday to Saturday for dinner 6 pm–9 pm | dadarestaurant.com.au

Pillowy-soft and fluffy donuts that are covered with cinnamon and your choice of a sticky and sweet filling—these donuts are a gluten-free foodie’s idea of heaven.

Perfect for an early morning coffee and donut run or to pre-order for the week ahead, choose from eight flavours (including Nutella, salted caramel, custard, apple and raspberry jam) and dig in. Want to know a pro tip? Eat one while it’s still warm—it’ll literally melt in your mouth.

Marketplace Gungahlin, outside Big W | Open Monday – Thursday, 9 am – 5:30 pm, Friday 9 am – 9 pm, Saturday 9 am – 5 pm and Sunday 10 am – 4 pm | donutbros.com.au

Pistachio Cake (Monster Kitchen and Bar)

A delightful mix of sweet and crunchy, the pandan ice cream with sheep’s yoghurt, pandan curd meringue, and coconut from Monster Kitchen and Bar will not only impress you, but it’ll also make you want to lick your plate until every tiny morsel is gone—and yes, I’m speaking from personal experience.

Completely gluten-free, it not only satisfies your sweet cravings, but it’s also good for the planet. Win-win-win.

So, you’ve just indulged in some delicious food from Lazy Su—now what? It’d be rude not to try their gluten-free peach sago pudding. A decadent combination of trifle, sticky rice, sago, peach, and coconut cream, it’s the perfect way to end the night on a sweet note.

Cannoli (The Cannoli Brothers)

Looking for a sweet treat to enjoy while exploring Canberra’s various markets? Popping up at the Capital Region Farmers Markets, the Old Bus Depot Markets, and the Haig Park Village Markets, the Cannoli Brothers have a range of gluten-free options always available. Think flavours including vanilla bean crema, pistachio and white chocolate ricotta, and blueberry ricotta. Yum.
