Trust us when we say that you need to try these newcomers as soon as you can.
From flavoursome Indian to freshly made maritozzo, traditional Vietnamese and laid-back food with Mediterranean and South American influences, these five new eateries sound so good that you’ll regret not getting there sooner.
Just make sure to go hungry…

Nestled on Northbourne Avenue, for those craving comforting, fresh and flavoursome Indian food, newcomer Amara should be at the top of your bucket list. Open for lunch and dinner, the team boasts over 25 years of experience in the kitchen – including involvement in one of Sydney’s finest Indian restaurants.
Sourcing ingredients from local producers, you can choose from a Banquet, Express or Takeaway lunch menu – all of which include mixed Daal, Palak Paneer, and Butter Chicken – while for dinner, there’s an abundance of dishes to dig into. The highlights? The Chicken MoMo, Bangalore Dosai, and Bhindi Dopiyaza all sound drool-worthy.

City workers craving a café that serves nutritious meals and cheeky treats should be excited by the news that Eight/Twenty has opened a seventh location on Mort Street.
All about finding the balance in life, for those who haven’t been to Canberra’s favourite culinary-conscious café before, you can expect everything from a Snickers Acai bowl to a vegan Buckwheat Waffle, a Japanese salad, and a Morocco Spiced Chicken burger.
Working in collaboration with 7 Miles Coffee, caffiends will also have seven blends to choose from along with fresh juices and smoothies. And don’t forget about the cake cabinet…

Petit Saigon (City)

A new vendor is open in Verity Lane Market and the moment we heard they have Banh Mi on the menu, we were sold.
Petite Saigon is a family-run business that is bringing a little touch of Southeast Asia to the city with their traditional Vietnamese dishes. Taking over the space formerly occupied by popular Singaporean hawker-style Lim Peh’s Wanton Noodle, from traditional Pho with beef or chicken to rice paper rolls (your choice of BBQ pork, pork, and prawn, lemongrass chicken, or tofu) head along to transport your tastebuds overseas without having to book a flight.

Rome’s most iconic pastry is coming to Canberra, and we’ll take one of every flavour please and thank you. Opening on Sunday 1 September at the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston, Sapori Lab is a micro bakery that is “blending tradition with innovation to create small-batch delights crafted with love and a touch of magic.”
Serving up traditional, freshly made maritozzo – little sweet brioche buns filled with whipped cream – get one in your mouth ASAP and thank us later.

Ballyhoo (Parkes)

Stracciatella with hazelnut agridolce, wood-grilled Wagyu Flank with chimi churri and miso, and chocolate torte with salted caramel ice cream…these are just some of the options on Ballyhoo’s First Look menu.
Now open in the Parliamentary Triangle, Ballyhoo is the newest addition to the Lawns of the Lobby precinct – and it sounds delicious. Now taking bookings for an exclusive, ticketed preview, you can be among the first to try the curated tasting menu from Executive Chef, Dave Young (that’s right – of beloved Temporada) ahead of Ballyhoo’s official launch in spring.
Promising food with a ‘fiery and zesty personality’ and ‘deliberately bold’ flavours, foodies need to cross this new restaurant off their bucket list. But just a tip: you will need to book this baby.
King George Terrace, Parkes | Open Tuesday to Sunday, from 5.30 pm | ballyhoo.au
