High Heels and High Tea at the Burbury

At HerCanberra, we know our way around a celebration.

Kids parties? We know how to coordinate a theme or two. Weddings? We have you sorted for any type of soiree you can image.

But what about something low key yet special? Intimate but engaging? Delicious but refined? For the loved one on who enjoy the spread and atmosphere of a summer picnic, but don’t enjoy sitting on the ground, High Tea is the ultimate upgrade.

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of enjoying the new High Tea menu at The Burbury Hotel, perched high above the bustling Parliamentary Triangle.

As you step out of the lift onto the rooftop terrace, you’re hit with a sweeping northeast-facing view of the city, Lake Burley Griffin and leafy Barton, which you’re encouraged to drink in – with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck champagne in hand, of course.

The floor to ceiling windows make the most of the panoramic views and flood the terrace with soft, natural light and tables are topped with lush greenery displayed in vases, with small white roses peeking through.

Once seated, we were served a three-tired platter of sweet and savoury treats to share between two. The bottom tier featured the savoury selection with a baked ricotta and basil tart and the smoked salmon, cucumber, wasabi, lime mayonnaise sandwiches, which were personal favourites of mine as they were light and refreshing on the hot summers day. And what would a high tea be without scones?

The next tier featured traditional, buttermilk scones and cranberry and orange zest scones with homemade preserve and whipped cream. The scones went down a treat, especially when accompanied by a cup of French Earl Grey tea, poured from my own (adorable) teapot.

For sweet tooths, the top tier is the stuff dreams are made of, with six different French mini sweets for you and your dining partner to try. Their passionfruit profiterole and the milk chocolate mousse cup with crumbled popcorn were absolute standouts due to their unique and daring flavour combinations.

Burbury Hotel opens their terrace to visitors looking for an experience that epitomises the expression ‘treat yourself ‘. Canberra’s seasonal changes and locally sourced produce have inspired the selection of revamped goodies and complement the Canberran climate.

From the ambience to the service to the food, a Burbury High Tea is the perfect destination date for anyone looking to treat themselves – or someone else.
