Inner South’s (and Fyshwick’s) hidden food gems
Posted on
Calling all southsiders, are your tastebuds craving something new, unexpected, and deliciously fresh?
Well, my foodie friends, let us point you in the direction of this mouth-watering list, the Inner South’s (and Fyshwick’s) hidden gems will give you a taste of Canberra’s best.
The team at HerCanberra loves nothing more than to bring you news of the hottest new places to eat in town. Lord knows, we never seem to run out of openings to write about. But what about “old” places to eat—those which have stood the test of time and which draw us back for comfort and culinary reassurance year after year? Or just the reliable locals that might not have the wow factor, but they have our hearts (because that’s what counts)?
Feeling hungry? Let’s dive in.

Lamsheds

Tucked away in Yarralaman shops, Lamsheds is an upmarket eatery where the food is rich and the atmosphere is warm. A decadent blend of flavours will take you on a culinary adventure – think striploin steak, mulled wine butter, Jerusalem artichoke, tempura eggplant, white miso, and sesame. Heaven! It’s the perfect place for date night or special dinner with the family.

Yarralumla Turkish Halal Pide
Yarralumla Turkish Halal Pide House is a firm favourite among diplomatic circles and common Canberrans alike, so much so that you can sometimes find yourself queuing out the door. One of the reasons it’s popular is value for money. Order a feast for four and you will walk away with enough food for eight (not actually exaggerating on this). Beautiful salads, charred succulent meats and—of course—fluffy bread with punchy dips is all part of the experience.

Melted Toasted Sandwich Emporium
If you haven’t yet experienced Melted, we encourage you to stop loafing about and trust us when we say you won’t be leaving hungry or disappointed. Their big portions (at a reasonable price, might I add) reimagine the classic toastie into creative, richly layered creations. Think mi goreng, chilli jam and fried eggs, the revered cheese and vegemite levelled up on thick Three Mills sourdough and the infamous lasagne toastie, which has gained a cult-like following. Delicious!
