Good Food Month 2020: foodie events not to miss

Posted on

If you ask us (and you should, we know a thing or two about food), there’s always a good reason to eat out in Canberra. But every year during March, things step up a notch with Good Food Month arriving in the capital. Here’s our pick for what not to miss during Good Food Month in 2020.

The Canberra Times Night Noodle Markets

Grab those well-worn and hard-working stretchy pants out of the drawer—it’s time to put them to good use. The Canberra Times Night Noodle Markets are back in 2020, and they’re hanging around a little longer than usual for a delicious 11 nights from 28 February until 9 March. As usual they’ll be right in the middle of the Enlighten projections, transforming Reconciliation Place into a bustling Asian street food festival.

This year’s smorgasbord includes tasty dishes from local favourites Korbq, Donburi Station and Superbao plus eats from further afield by Hoy Pinoy, Gelato Messina, May’s Malaysian Hawker, Wonderbao, Bangkok Street Food, Twistto, Satay Brothers, Chinese Dim Sum King, Mochi Donuts, Waffleland, The Pham Sisters, Raijin, Poklol x Puffle, Chur Burger, Bao Brothers and plenty more.

Once you’ve secured your feast, there’s plenty of space to sit around with friends and enjoy live music, DJs and lion dancing.

The Night Noodle Markets are open from 5pm Monday to Friday, and from 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free, leave the cash at home—all stalls accept card-only to keep the lines down. Click here for more info.

Matt Blackwell at Monster Kitchen and Bar

Known for his ever-growing tattoos and love of music, chef Matt Blackwell will be coming down from Brisbane’s art mecca GOMA for a one-night-only dinner at Monster Kitchen and Bar on 5 March. Bringing his authentic artistic flair to the dinner table, Matt will curate creative plates set to a soundtrack of perfect feasting tunes, using the finest local and sustainable produce in each plate.

Blackwell boasts an impressive CV in the kitchen. He earned his stripes across the Tasman at acclaimed Auckland restaurant Sidart, which scored three hats and Restaurant of the Year during his tenure. Back in his homeland of the UK, Blackwell was part of the launch team for celebrity chef Michael O’Hare’s restaurant The Man Behind the Curtain, which won a Michelin Star within its first year. He also spent time at two-hatted Ides restaurant in Melbourne before making the move to Brisbane.

This exclusive Good Food Month dinner is on at 7pm, Thursday 5 March at Monster Kitchen & Bar. Tickets are $180, which includes multiple courses with premium wine and beer.

Louis Tikaram at Lanterne Rooms

After spending the past five years feeding the VIP West Hollywood crowd at his lauded LA restaurant E.P. & L.P., acclaimed chef Louis Tikaram returned to Australia last year for his next project—palatial Cantonese restaurant, Stanley, at Brisbane’s buzzing Howard Smith Wharves precinct.

And now he’s coming to Canberra for a culture-clashing dinner at Malaysian-inspired Lanterne Rooms in Campbell. He’ll be bringing together the fire from his Southeast Asian menus at E.P./L.P., the refined delicacy of Cantonese cuisine from Stanley and the authentic Nyonya flavours that dominate the menu at Lanterne Rooms to create a six-course banquet that will take you on a flavour-packed culinary journey.

Spots available for Friday March 13—tickets are $175, which includes six courses with premium wine and beer.
