Pie Time: 30 days in the Southern Pie-lands

Posted on

If you don’t like pie, you might be in the wrong country.

For the month of June, the Southern Highlands becomes the Southern Pie-Lands for its annual celebration of the great Australian pie, with hundreds of delicious themed events, festivals, tours and activities.

Following a win at the 2018 Australian Tourism Awards, the Southern Highlands is baking up an even tastier month of events for Pie Time 2019.

If baking your own pastries is what puffs your crust, don’t pie-crastinate in signing up to the cooking classes on offer, where you can master the art of everything from a good ol’ chunky steak pie to the perfect lemon meringue.

However, you’d rather eat than bake, there are lots of wonderful new tours, activities and experiences for you to enjoy, such a night of stargazing with award-winning pies and wines.

This year, experience Sweety Pies and Bubbles, where you can match sweet pies to the region’s best sparkling wines and discover a world of perfect pairings.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to make a good pie, then you should join the pie com-pie-tition for home bakers and chefs alike to pit pie against pie, with six categories including red meat, white meat, vegetarian, seafood, sweet and an artisan entry.

If you like big pie and you can not lie, road trip to Bowral’s two-day Pie Fest which will showcase everything there is to love about pies, with market stalls, pie cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, family fun and more.

Everyone loves a High Tea, but what about a Pie Tea? These decadent events offer all the delicious components of your traditional High Tea with both sweet and savoury pies at a variety of locations across the Southern Highlands.

There will also be oodles of tours to explore, from cycle tours to themed tours to winery tours (always with a side of pie, of course).

Or why now take a pie-cation, where you can stay for a couple of nights and enjoy all the Pie Time events and activities. From hotels to B&Bs you can experience ‘Dine with a Pie’ and sample the region’s signature pies across 50 hotels around the Southern Highlands.

With the Southern Highlands only a 2-hour drive from Canberra, there’s no excuse not to be pie-ous this June.
