The Abbey: live music and more…

Posted on

Soju Girl, Ellacure Restaurant, Versatile restaurant – easily some of the best restaurants in Canberra, delivering tasty food and quality service but I’m sure you all know this. What about The Abbey Function Centre? I’ll let you in on a little secret. Local man, Andrew Hollands, is one of the masterminds behind all these amazing establishments. He’s also responsible for the transformation of The Abbey, turning it into much more than just a function centre.

The Abbey is nestled in the lovely Gold Creek Village and was originally a wedding venue however Andrew, with the help of his dedicated team has brought this place to life. In 2012, big Aussie acts including: Julia Stone, Ash Grunwald and Ian Moss performed on the Abbey stage. Already, 2013 has started with a bang when Pete Murray and Newton Faulkner performed at sold out shows. One of the most recent performers was four times ARIA award winner, Kate Noonan.

Andrew’s love for food and working in the hospitality industry since he was 13 is living proof of turning your passion into a successful career. So you’d expect the quality of the food at the Abbey to be outstanding with an amazing menu. He’s set the bar high with all his restaurants, especially modern Asian fusion restaurant, Soju Girl. The menu at The Abbey has been carefully constructed, using only the best local produce.

With its dramatic cathedral style ceilings, hosting a variety of events from theatrical performance, live music, comedy shows, weddings and offering venue hire, The Abbey has something for everyone. Whether you want a classy girls’ night out or to enjoy an intimate evening with your partner, if you like the finer things then this is the place for you.

Whatever genre of show you attend, you’re promised a truly unique experience. There’s also a dinner and show evening planned for some events. I haven’t been lucky enough to attend one of these and I’m yet to find anything similar to this in Canberra.

Sitting down, enjoying a delicious meal in the company of your closest friends while being entertained – sounds pretty perfect to me. I’m imagining a giant dinner party except you don’t have to clean up the mess afterwards. Pretty much a win-win situation. A booked out show holds about 250 people for a sit down reception or 400 standing up. The attentive service, well executed menu and the atmosphere blend together to guarantee a great night out.

Andrew and the team at The Abbey also contribute their time and expertise to the Canberra community and are involved in charity events, cooking demonstrations, supporting local schools and helping to further develop the hospitality industry. I’m certain they’ll continue to bring some great entertainment and big acts to the Nation’s capital.

There are many shows in the making with some already announced. As well as The Australian Burlesque Festival, which is sure to be a sizzling show on Thursday 20 June, the latest Mondayitis Cabaret is also set to entertain on Monday 13 May. You can buy your tickets here!

What boosts my morale……actually this reminds me of a quote I used to have one my wall as a teenager
” What passion cannot Music raise and quell?” from A Song For St. Cecilia’s Day by John Dryden.
Music can change my mood instantly – so it can definitely boost my morale….in fact I think I need some of that now, so see you later, I’m off to listen to some lovely morale boosting music.
Thankyou for the reminder of such a lovely quote…

I have a hill near my house, and every time I feel like I need a boost I run to the top of that hill and take in the beautiful views over Gungahlin all the way to Telstra Tower, and I take 10 minutes to have a really good stretch with the sun on my face and the panoramic view all around me. Then I run all the way home – morale definitely boosted for the day!

Turning up the volume to some of my favourite tunes and having a good boogie at home alone when no one is watching always manages to lift my morale!
