Breaking ground at Yarralumla: Could the Canberra Brickworks be our very own Grounds of Alexandria?

DOMA Group is set to break ground on one of its most ambitious developments, creating a thriving commercial and residential precinct in the historic brickworks site of Yarralumla.

Following a number of recent approvals, including the Development Approval being granted for the repurposing of the heritage-listed brick kilns and associated buildings, the new world-class commercial and retail destination in the heritage core of the site will be known as The Brickworks.

It will feature a dynamic mix of office spaces and luxurious wellness facilities, including a gym, day spa, and skin clinic, as well as allied health services.  A curated selection of food and beverage venues will bring the precinct to life, with a bakery, wine bar, cafés and restaurants, all of which will be housed within the heritage brick kilns and have access to a working garden.

The precinct will be centred around a beautifully landscaped piazza, complete with deep-rooted trees and a water feature.

Established in 1913 and operating until 1976, the Canberra Brickworks produced the iconic “Canberra Red” brick via six now heritage-listed kilns.

“This is an incredibly exciting project for DOMA and for Canberra,” says Jure Domazet, Managing Director of DOMA.

“Our vision for the Brickworks site is to create a vibrant precinct that honours the site’s rich heritage while offering contemporary spaces for the community to connect, work and relax. We look forward to carefully curating a mix of experiences and venues that will make this a truly special destination for locals and visitors alike.”

The broader Canberra Brickworks development will include 380 new residential dwellings, offering a mix of stand-alone houses, terraces, and apartments. The first stage of the residential development, comprising free-standing homes and terraced townhomes, is anticipated to be released to the market in the first quarter of 2026. The project will also see the creation of over 30,000 m² of landscaped parklands, providing enhanced green spaces for residents and visitors.

On-site works, including civil and infrastructure upgrades across the 16-hectare site, are expected to commence in the coming weeks. The Brickworks Heritage Core precinct is targeting an official opening in mid 2027.
